JOB DETAILS:

Job Purpose
The Zambia Environmental Management Agency (ZEMA) has embarked on an ambitious project of constructing, establishing and operating the first Environmental Research and Analytical Laboratory at its Ndola office. The role the senior researcher is to support the Department of Research to ensure successful project implementation during the laboratory construction phase, laboratory preparatory phase and operational phase.

Main duties and Accountabilities (without limitation)
• Plan, organise, direct and coordinate activities in the Environmental research and analytical laboratory.
• Ensure Health and Safety, Procurement and Staff policies are adhered to in laboratory operations.
• Oversee tests and experiments and ensure that all tests and assignments are completed on time.
• Manage storage of samples and laboratory equipment.
• Develop quality control protocols for operation of lab equipment. vi. Provide high quality data related to Environmental Management. vil. Develop and adapt sampling and analysis protocols when required.
• Implement good laboratory practices.
• ix. Receiving, labelling and analysing samples (blood, toxic, tissue etc.)
• Designing and executing laboratory testing according standard procedures
• Conducting experiments under defined conditions to verify/reject various types of hypotheses using refined scientific methods
• Contribute to routine environmental sample collection and other analytical work when required.
• Produce reports to aid investigations and decision making.
• Contribute to the design and writing of scientific papers for the Agency.
• Train lab assistants, students, trainees and and other relevant personnel.
• Participate in and contribute to workshops and training of to build capacity for national and regional environmental management as guided by Government and/or the Agency
• Minimum Qualifications and Experience Grade 12 School Certificate or its equivalent.
• Bsc in Laboratory Science/Chemistry or other related science field

Minimum Relevant Pre-Job Experience
• Five (5) years' work experience in a reputable organization, of which three (3) years must have been at supervisory level. Ability to operate various analytical equipment and manage Laboratory Information Management Systems.

• Ability to lead a team of scientists.
• Exceptional Integrity, self-starters,
• Goal-oriented with demonstrated experience in working under possibly hazardous conditions (e.g., pathogens or chemicals).
• He/she should be well-trained to maintain safety conditions and will be passionate for doing work that makes things move forward.
• Tenure of employment & Remuneration
• Three (3) year contract term, renewable subject to satisfactory performance
