OUR ORIGINS
World Bicycle Relief was founded in 2005 by F.K. Day and Leah Missbach Day in response to the Indian Ocean tsunami. As a founder of SRAM Corporation and a leader in product development, F.K.’s role offered a unique opportunity to problem-solve with cycling industry leaders. As a documentary photographer, Leah’s gift for sharing stories helped bring the devastation of those affected by the tsunami to light. Together, with support from SRAM and other industry leaders, F.K. and Leah launched World Bicycle Relief to provide bicycles for those in need. In partnership with aid organizations in Sri Lanka, we distributed more than 24,000 bicycles to displaced survivors, providing access to education, healthcare, and livelihoods while reconnecting entire communities. Over 15 years later, more than 150 staff across 13 countries are changing lives with bikes.

ZAMBIA ON THE MOVE
Our work in Africa began in Zambia with volunteer health workers fighting the HIV/AIDS epidemic in 2009. Our first education program also began in Zambia. Since then, our continued investment in the country has expanded bicycle infrastructure and offered mobility to students, health workers, farmers, entrepreneurs and field mechanics across the country.

THE BIKE
Built for distance and durability, our Buffalo Bicycle empowers people in rural communities to thrive.

MOBILIZE SOMEONE IN NEED
MOVING PEOPLE FORWARD
Designed by World Bicycle Relief, the Buffalo Bicycle isn’t your typical bike. While most of the world’s bicycles are lightweight, complex and made for recreation, we designed the Buffalo to meet the pressing needs of people in rural regions of developing countries. Our collaboration with industry leaders reflects a commitment to creating a stronger, simpler, and sustainable bicycle that can withstand harsh rural conditions.

THE ANATOMY OF A BUFFALO
Power is reaching 4x more patients with your forged axle pedals.
Opportunity is charting new routes to class with your puncture-resistant tires.
Control is giving your sister a lift to school safely with all-weather coaster brakes.
Dependability is knowing your heavy-gauge steel frame will go the distance.
Strength is easily carrying 220 lbs of produce on your rear carrier.

EDUCATION
With bikes, travel times are reduced, giving students more time to learn. Providing bikes to students in rural developing regions helps lift them and their families out of poverty.

HEALTHCARE
Bicycles enable health workers to visit more patients' homes, more often. Increased quality of care leads to improved health for entire communities.

ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT
Buffalo Bicycles provide greater carrying capacity, enabling farmers and entrepreneurs to transport more goods and save valuable time.

GENDER EQUALITY
Distance, safety concerns and household chores often prevent girls from receiving educations. Bicycles help girls stay in school and pursue their dreams.

More patient visits made by health workers
More dairy deliveries completed by farmers
