Job Purpose

To provide professional pharmaceutical services while ensuring full compliance with Zambian pharmaceutical laws and regulations. The Pharmacist will serve as the Responsible Pharmacist and oversee administrative operations, regulatory compliance, and professional standards of the pharmacy.

Key Responsibilities

Professional & Clinical Duties

  • Dispense prescription medicines accurately in accordance with Zambian laws.
  • Review prescriptions for legality, completeness, and therapeutic appropriateness.
  • Provide patient counselling on medication use, dosage, contraindications, and side effects.
  • Promote rational medicine use and antimicrobial stewardship.
  • Ensure proper storage and handling of medicines in line with ZAMRA guidelines.
  • Supervise pharmacy technologists and support staff.

Regulatory Compliance

  • Act as the Responsible Pharmacist as required by ZAMRA.
  • Ensure the pharmacy maintains:
    • Valid ZAMRA Premises Licence.
    • Valid Annual Practising Licence.
    • Controlled Drugs Register.
    • Pharmacovigilance reporting records.
  • Ensure compliance with the Medicines and Allied Substances Act No. 3 of 2013.
  • Maintain proper record keeping of:
    • Schedule IV and controlled medicines.
    • Prescription registers.
    • Invoice and supplier documentation.
  • Ensure medicines are procured only from ZAMRA-licensed wholesalers.
  • Prepare and facilitate ZAMRA inspections.
  • Report adverse drug reactions (ADRs) to ZAMRA.
  • Ensure cold chain management where applicable.
  • Oversee renewal of all regulatory licences on time.

Administrative & Operational Duties

  • Oversee stock procurement, stock rotation (FEFO), and expiry management.
  • Conduct periodic stock counts and reconciliation.
  • Supervise daily pharmacy operations.
  • Implement and maintain Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
  • Monitor pricing compliance where applicable.
  • Manage supplier relationships and ordering schedules.
  • Support financial oversight related to stock control and shrinkage.
  • Maintain proper filing and documentation systems.

Risk & Quality Management

  • Ensure infection prevention and control standards are maintained.
  • Investigate dispensing errors and implement corrective actions.
  • Ensure ethical and professional conduct at all times.
  • Maintain confidentiality of patient information.

Minimum Qualifications & Requirements

  • Bachelor of Pharmacy (BPharm) or equivalent.
  • Registered with the Health Professions Council of Zambia (HPCZ).
  • Valid Practising Licence.
  • Registered with ZAMRA as a Pharmacist.
  • At least 3 years’ experience in retail/community pharmacy (preferred).
  • Sound knowledge of Zambian pharmaceutical regulations.
  • Strong administrative and compliance management skills.
