ETG Climate Solutions is a new business unit within the ETG Commodities vertical with a current staff complement of 70 people across Switzerland, Spain, Zambia, Malawi, South Africa and Kenya. Climate Solutions seeks to build upon the Group’s large implementation experience of various farmer related initiatives across Sub-Saharan Africa, to deliver climate and livelihood benefits at scale to farmers, using modern tools and carbon market access. Climate Solutions has developed a bespoke program for emerging farmers across Africa called the African Emerging Farmer Carbon Abatement Program (AEF CAP) which has already been launched in Zambia, Malawi and Kenya.

ROLE

The role of the Agroforestry Monitoring Manager is to provide overall monitoring guidance and support to the teams implementing our agroforestry projects in Zambia. This includes the development, implementation and enhancement of key tools and processes to maximize efficiency and success in meeting core objectives throughout the implementation and reporting period. This position also assists in scoping potential partners and landscapes for new agroforestry carbon project opportunities.

The Agroforestry Monitoring Manager reports directly to the Climate Solutions Head of Agroforestry, assisting in syncing and standardizing programmatic and monitoring project components.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Core duties include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Provide overall monitoring guidance and support to implementing project teams and ensure compliance with Climate Solutions policies and procedures as well local policy and carbon standard parameters
  • Work with project teams to ensure quality project deliverables on time to meet milestones per their scope, timeline, and budget
  • Lead on the design of the monitoring, evaluation, adaptation and learning plan and logical framework templates
  • Lead on the development of all data collection tools and processes
  • Assist teams in field data collection logistics and analysis
  • Lead on developing Terms of Reference for all major project activities
  • Assist on developing and overseeing the internal project management reporting structure and process across all levels
  • Assist in scoping new agroforestry project opportunities including developing and conducting socio-economic and biophysical surveys
  • Assist in the development and implementation of agroforestry carbon trials
  • Lead on country data research and updates for weather, pest, disease and other critical aspects which help mitigate risk to project success

QUALIFICATIONS

Education

A bachelor’s degree (master’s preferred) in monitoring, evaluation and learning (MEL), project management, agroforestry, forestry, natural resource management or other relevant fields.

Experience

A minimum of 5 years’ project management and MEL experience working in a relevant sector with smallholder farmers and project field teams in Zambia.

Strong experience in proficiency of:

  • Overall management of project teams and activities
  • Reporting tools and structure
  • Project budget tools
  • Coordinating, training and communicating with local and international teams
  • Developing logical frameworks, workplans, SMART indicators and targets
  • Biophysical data collection (e.g. vegetation assessments) and socio-economic data collection (e.g. household surveys)
  • Digital data collection tools (e.g. KoboCollect, GIS Cloud)
  • Handling and manipulating spatial data and GIS software (e.g. QGIS, ArcGIS)
  • Statistical data analysis methods and software (e.g. SPSS, R) is a plus
  • Current trends and practices in carbon policy and conservation and land management in Zambia
