Eastern Tropical Fruit Company Limited (ETF) is jointly owned by Zambia Fruit Company and Vitaplus Foods Limited, under the Industrial Development Corporation (IDC). The Company operates a hybrid fruit and vegetable processing plant located in Katete District, Eastern Province of Zambia.
Role Overview:
The Boiler Operator is responsible for the safe and efficient operation, monitoring, and maintenance of the factory’s boiler system. This role ensures a reliable supply of steam or hot water for processing, sterilization, and other production needs. The operator will perform routine checks, troubleshoot issues, and adhere to all safety and regulatory standards.
Key Roles and Responsibilities:
- Start up, operate, and shut down steam boilers in accordance with operational guidelines and production schedules.
- Monitor boiler pressure, water levels, fuel supply, and temperatures to ensure safe and efficient operation.
- Adjust valves, gauges, and controls to regulate steam or hot water flow as needed.
- Perform routine checks and preventive maintenance on boilers, feed pumps, valves, and auxiliary equipment.
- Identify mechanical or operational issues and carry out minor repairs or escalate to maintenance teams.
- Clean and service boiler components to maintain efficiency and prolong equipment lifespan.
- Adhere to all health, safety, and environmental standards in boiler operations.
- Conduct safety checks and respond promptly to abnormal readings, alarms, or emergency situations.
- Ensure compliance with statutory regulations including those from the Zambia Environmental Management Agency (ZEMA) and other relevant authorities.
- Maintain detailed logs of boiler readings, maintenance activities, fuel usage, and operational incidents.
- Report anomalies, incidents, and maintenance needs to the relevant supervisors in a timely manner.
- Assist in preparing reports for audits and compliance reviews.
- Work closely with production and utility teams to align steam supply with operational needs.
- Provide technical input on boiler performance and recommend efficiency improvements.
- Participate in training and skill development activities to improve boiler and plant operations.
Minimum Qualifications & Experience
- Grade 12 Certificate with five (5) O Levels.
- Diploma in Mechanical Engineering, Power Plant Technology, or a related field.
- Boiler Operation License or Certification from a recognized institution or regulatory body.
- Minimum of 3 years of experience operating industrial steam boilers, preferably in a manufacturing or food processing environment.
- Working knowledge of boiler controls, water treatment systems, and steam distribution networks.
- Membership with a recognized professional regulatory body

- Technical Knowledge: Strong understanding of boiler systems, their components, and associated safety protocols.
- Attention to Detail: Meticulous in monitoring gauges, readings, and performing safety checks.
- Problem-Solving: Ability to quickly identify and troubleshoot operational issues.
- Safety Consciousness: A strong, unwavering commitment to boiler safety and regulatory compliance.
- Physical Stamina: Capable of performing physically demanding tasks and working in a hot, industrial environment.
