Zambia Sugar is inviting applications for the position of Crane Operator x2 – Offcrop, under the Manufacturing Department (Nakambala). The position reports to the Supervisory Artisan. The successful candidates will be responsible for supporting maintenance to achieve maximum plant availability and equipment capacity, ensuring compliance to minimum operating standards and/or work instructions.

Responsibilities or duties

Support maintenance to achieve maximum plant availability and equipment capacity, ensuring compliance to minimum operating standards and/or work instructions. Ensure workshop and plant housekeeping is in line with the 5S standard and show that no job is complete until the work area is cleaned, and all safety equipment is reinstated. Check the cranes for defects and report to Supervisor. Erect and dismantle scaffolds, platforms, chairs and ladders and assist with work in elevated positions. Arrange chain blocks or tirfor, chain puller at any heavy task to lift or pull such materials and place them in position as required by Rigger. On stop days under the supervision of Rigger, assist Fitters in stripping and re-assembling of heavy equipment and Boilermakers/Welders to move welding machines and equipment within the factory areas. Ensure that all rigging equipment are put away safely at the tool shed and lock up daily. Assist with stripping and assembly of mills and other heavy machinery. Lift, move and install machinery up to 18 tons with cranes, chain blocks, tirfors, and winches. Grease overhead crane, winch wires, Hilo off-loaders. Visually check bolts on cranes and tighten loose bolts. Drive and operate all overhead cranes. Ensure the Job Plan / Checklist on the WO is diligently followed as per the work-order tasks. Provide feedback in terms of quality and improvement to Job Plans. Contribute to the RCA process. Promote a culture of consistently assessing risks and drive continuous improvement throughout operations. Adhere to and promote SHERQ & Food Safety standards. Promote and adhere to ABF’s procedures, policies, and guidelines, including, without limitation, those relating to SHERQ, Competition Law and Anti-Bribery and Corruption (ABC).

Qualifications or requirements (e.g., education, skills)

Grade 12 Certificate. Must have a Certificate of Competence in Mobile Crane Operations from a recognised training Institution. Must have a valid Crane Operating Permit from an authorised government institution. Must have a minimum of a Class C manual driver’s licence.

Experience needed

2+ years post experience in a heavy industry environment in a similar role. Mechanical fitting experience is an added advantage.
