The National Democratic Institute for International Affairs (NDI) is a nonprofit, nonpartisan organization working to support and strengthen democratic institutions worldwide through citizen participation, openness and accountability in government. Since its founding in 1983, NDI and its local partners have worked to establish and strengthen political and civic organizations, safeguard elections, and promote citizen participation, openness and accountability in government. NDI’s work in Zambia supports democratic institutions to better engage with stakeholders and citizens on national policy, legislation development and citizen concerns and priorities.

NDI invites applications from suitably qualified persons to fill one vacant post in Lusaka, detailed below. Overall Internship Description 

The Elections Program Intern will support the day-to-day implementation of NDI’s election-related activities, including program coordination, research, reporting, and logistics. The intern will work closely with the Program Manager to ensure smooth execution of initiatives that promote democratic electoral processes.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Assist in the planning, coordination, and implementation of election program activities.
  • Support data collection and analysis using established tools and procedures, ensuring timely input and accurate maintenance of information.
  • Assist with the development of program materials, including periodic reports, briefs, and presentations.
  • Support logistical arrangements for training, partner/stakeholder meetings, and related electoral observation activities.
  • Support the documentation of lessons learned and facilitation of learning and reflection sessions.
  • Contribute to political and electoral analysis, including monitoring media and reporting on current events.
  • Perform additional administrative and logistical tasks as needed to support program goals.

Qualifications and Desired Attributes:

  • Bachelor’s degree in law, political science, international relations, development studies, public administration, or a related field.
  • Demonstrated interest in elections, democracy and governance, or civic engagement.
  • Strong research and presentation skills.
  • Excellent communication skills in English (oral and written).
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and manage multiple priorities.
  • Highly organized and detail oriented.
  • Excellent training and facilitation skills.
