Barrick Lumwana Mining is seeking a dedicated and experienced Environmental Coordinator to join the Lumwana Expansion Project Team in Kalumbila, North West Province, Zambia. This full-time, fixed-term position offers an exciting opportunity to contribute to sustainable environmental management within the mining and power transmission sectors. If you are passionate about environmental stewardship and compliance, this role will allow you to make a significant impact on the 330 Kv Overhead Transmission Line (OHL) Project.
Responsibilities or duties
Reporting to the Superintendent Environmental – LEP, you will coordinate and oversee all environmental management and compliance activities throughout the construction and implementation phases of the OHL Project. Your core duties will include:
- Managing daily environmental activities along the OHL project corridor and conducting regular field inspections to ensure compliance with ESIA commitments, Environmental Management Plans, permits, licenses, and regulatory standards.
- Monitoring and controlling environmental risks related to vegetation clearing, biodiversity disturbance, soil erosion, sedimentation, water resources, waste management, fuel, and hazardous materials.
- Supervising contractor environmental performance, including audits, inspections, and ensuring corrective actions are implemented promptly.
- Supporting investigations and reporting on environmental incidents, spills, complaints, and non-compliances with root-cause analysis and corrective measures.
- Maintaining the Environmental Obligations and Risk Register, ensuring all commitments are tracked and closed appropriately.
- Coordinating environmental requirements with regulatory authorities such as the Forestry Department, ZEMA, and WARMA, and supporting regulatory inspections and compliance submissions.
- Providing technical environmental advice to project management, engineering, construction, and procurement teams.
- Identifying opportunities for continuous improvement in environmental performance and risk management.
- Delivering timely environmental performance updates and escalating significant risks or compliance issues.
Qualifications or requirements (e.g., education, skills)
To be considered for this role, candidates must meet the following criteria:
- Grade 12 certificate and a Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Engineering Management or a related field.
- Proficient knowledge and practical application of ISO 14001 Environmental Management Systems and environmental auditing.
- Strong understanding of environmental legislation, regulatory requirements, permits, licenses, Environmental Management Plans (EMPs), and ESIA commitments.
- Demonstrated ability to engage effectively with regulatory authorities, consultants, contractors, project teams, and other stakeholders.
- Membership in the Engineering Institution of Zambia is required.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills in English.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications (Excel, PowerPoint, Word).
- Valid Zambian driver’s license.
Experience needed
Minimum of five years’ relevant experience, preferably within mining, power transmission linear infrastructure, construction, or major capital projects.
Proven experience in contractor environmental management, field inspections, audits, and compliance monitoring.
Experience in environmental incident investigation, root-cause analysis, corrective action management, and environmental reporting.
Specific experience managing environmental aspects of OHL or similar linear infrastructure projects, including vegetation clearing, access roads, tower foundations, and conductor stringing.
