Background

The CGIAR research initiative “Ukama Ustawi: Diversification in East and Southern Africa” (UU) and the “Accelerating Impacts of CGIAR Climate Research for Africa” (AICCRA) program, funded by the World Bank, have invested in and partnered with Munda Makeover (MMO), a farm makeover reality TV show broadcast in Zambia that disseminates information on agricultural practices, technologies, and climate at scale and in an entertaining way. The International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI) is conducting an impact evaluation of Munda Makeover in 160 pre-selected villages in Central Province and Eastern Province.

We are looking for a field coordinator to organize various project activities, including facilitating local IRB application processes, organizing screenings in 80 villages to further expose farmers to the MMO show, organizing input fairs in 80 villages to connect farmers with input and service providers, and organizing dissemination workshops to present the results from the impact evaluation after the project concludes. The work will be implemented in the Eastern province and Central Province, Zambia, and the consultancy position will be based in Lusaka, Zambia.

Scope of work

  • Facilitate IRB application processes with the local IRB, including submitting progress reports and making payments where due;
  • Organize screenings across 80 villages, with each village receiving one screening each and consisting of 2 Munda Makeover episodes (each episode has an approximate duration of 30 minutes). The screenings will be held between June and July 2025.
  • Organize input fairs in 10 camps to connect farmers with input and service providers. Extend invitations to all study farmers in 80 villages to the input fair held in their local camp and discount vouchers for buying preselected inputs either at the input fair or in local distribution centers. Invite and coordinate with input and service providers to offer their services at each of the 10 input fairs. The input fairs will be held in October and November 2025.
  • Organize three dissemination workshops in Petauke, Chibombo, and Lusaka, securing a reasonable venue and inviting and coordinating travel for government participants and other project stakeholders such as input providers. These workshops will be in December 2025.
  • Assist in the coordination of the endline survey data collection
  • Supporting the project in any other way that is important to the successful execution of the impact evaluation.

Required qualifications of the consultant

  • MBA degree with a background in agricultural sciences, agricultural economics, or related fields.
  • Strong research skills, with ability to manage monitoring and evaluation research in Zambia.
  • Excellent knowledge of Microsoft Office and Kobo, with a good apprehension of STATA, R, QGIS, and other software relevant to the coordination of impact evaluations.
  • At least 10 years of experience with research, monitoring and evaluation, and knowledge management.
  • Excellent analytical, communication and presentation skills, and fluency in both English and Nyanja.
  • Experience in building trust and good relations with interviewees and communities.

Preferred qualifications

  • Experience in financial inclusion, agricultural economics, rural development and/or gender fields.
  • Having a strong network to build connections with NGOs, the financial sector, and agricultural service providers in Zambia
  • Experience working with village leadership and households in the study sample from previous project activities
  • Proficiency in local languages in Eastern Province and Central Province such as Bemba, Tonga, or Nyanja.
