Position: Oncology Program Pediatrician
Reporting to (PIH/IMB): IMB Oncology Program Director and District Clinical Director
Reports to (MOH): Butaro Hospital Medical Director
Summary of role: This is a full-time position whose main responsibility is the direct provision of medical care for pediatric oncology patients at Butaro Hospital. The Oncology Program Pediatrician also plays a key role in programmatic implementation of Butaro Cancer Center of Excellence (BCCOE), including training and mentorship of staff and trainees, documentation and recording of patients’ care in the electronic medical records, patient advocacy, systems quality improvement, and application of BCCOE policies and standard operating procedures;
Specific Responsibilities:
CLINICAL & TEACHING/MENTORING
With input from Boston-based cancer expert team;
• Provide direct clinical care for hospitalized Butaro pediatric oncology patients. This includes rounding daily in the pediatric oncology ward and the outpatient infusion center and leading management of these patients;
• Provide direct care of outpatient oncology pediatric patients, at least 1 day a week, including review and staging of patients for radiotherapy referral;
• Support other general practitioners on the management of pediatric patients with cancer or who are suspected to have cancer managed in other wards and clinics;
• Serve as accepting pediatrician for pediatric cancer patients being referred to Butaro from outside facilities;
• Provide CME/CPD training and bedside mentoring to residents, medical students, nurses and other health professionals in the Cancer team at Butaro;
• Participate in national oncology trainings;
• Perform biopsy collection and other procedures related to pediatric cancer patient care.
ADMIN & PROGRAMMATIC
Support patient case management, in particular:
• Work with the oncology team to ensure that all cancer patients are receiving appropriate treatment and follow up;
• Review pathology results of patients cared for at Butaro, and ensure follow up and management based on results;
• Work with pathology team to support coordination of biopsy processing and reporting;
• Facilitate quality improvement and assist with general administration:
• Collaborate with Butaro hospital leadership, Chief of Nursing, Head of Pharmacy, and Head of Lab to ensure proper and harmonized delivery of cancer care services;
• Contribute to the development of policies being developed for the IMB Oncology Program;
• Identify and address social and logistical issues that may limit care for oncology patients;
• Support the oncology team to determine, prioritize, and monitor radiotherapy referrals and other patient transfers for specialty care;
• Work closely with EMR team to ensure ONC electronic medical records are up to date and the implementation of paperless point of care goes smoothly;
• Maintain communication between IMB ONC program and Butaro leadership team regarding the cancer program, quality improvement, and other challenges
MEETINGS
Attend the following meetings:
• Butaro ONC team check-ins, which include the review of challenging cancer patients admitted or seen in a clinic. (weekly);
• Participate in mentoring check-ins with Oncology Program specialists (weekly);
• Participate in clinical oncology calls for consultation with Boston-based oncologists (weekly);
• Participate in multi-disciplinary quality assurance meetings with District-based MOH and PIH ONC teams, including social work, mental health, pharmacy, and nursing, to discuss and address any clinical, patient safety or administrative problems that arise;
• Participate in quarterly cross-sites NCD meetings (quarterly), and meetings relevant to programmatic focus areas;
• Attend national level meetings depending on scope and availability and national ONC technical working group meetings (variable);
Professional development
• Mentor-ship from IMB Oncology Program clinical specialists and programmatic leaders;
• Programmatic and public health mentor-ship and exposure, including but not limited to the areas of program design and strategy, financial planning and budget management, health information systems, supply chain management, and quality improvement;
• Participation in oncology research activities, with access to research mentor-ship (subject to availability); Ideal Attributes for the position:
• Residency in pediatrics and child health plus at least 2 years of experience in oncology care and willingness to develop a pediatric oncology career;
• Pediatric oncology exposure is an added value;
• Have basic pediatric oncology skills and interest in mentoring other people;
• Highly motivated to play a leadership role in cancer care at Butaro Hospital;
• Understands and upholds principles of equity and alignment with national priorities in provision of cancer care in Rwanda;
• Highly organized and able to keep track of multiple tasks simultaneously;
• Strong communication, mentoring and teaching skills;
• Ability to work well with diverse team;
• Prior experience working with international humanitarian organizations is an added value.
