The role of Project Field Officer (Assaying) is a temporary for 6 months in the Commercial Directorate. The location of this position is Serenje and Mansa.

Job Purpose:

To carry out on-site manganese testing, sampling, and assaying to determine purity, composition, and value of manganese sourced from artisanal and small-scale miners (ASMs) and other suppliers, ensuring accuracy, transparency, and compliance with responsible sourcing standards.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Conduct on-site assaying of manganese using XRF analysers and/or fire assay methods.
  • Record and report manganese purity results, weights, and related data (level of impurities such as iron, silica, phosphorous) in line with approved procedures.
  • Support verification of the chain of custody for all manganese received, ensuring traceability.
  • Maintain calibration and performance logs for assay equipment.
  • Liaise with purchasers and supervisors to confirm assay-based pricing for each transaction.
  • Prepare and submit daily assay and quality reports to Head Office.
  • Ensure responsible sourcing compliance, verify that manganese originates from approved sources and non-conflict areas.
  • Maintain a secure and safe work environment for handling the manganese ore.
  • Participate in periodic stock reconciliation and audits at the buying centres.

Job Requirements

Qualifications and Experience

  • GCE or Equivalent with Credits or Better in Five Subjects, Mathematics and English Included.
  • Diploma or Degree in Metallurgy, Mining, Geology, Chemistry, or related field.
  • At least 2 years’ experience in mineral assaying or laboratory work (ferrous and base metals preferred).
  • Familiarity with fire assay and XRF techniques.
  • Understanding of manganese purity measurement and reporting standards.

  • High integrity and ethical conduct.
  • Analytical and detail oriented.
  • Accuracy and reliability under pressure.
  • Proficiency with assay instruments and data logging.
