Job Description
Lumwana Mining Company seeks to recruit highly committed employees for the position of Safety Officer – LEP (Fixed Term) to join the Project Department. We are in search of an individual who can champion Barrick’s DNA by:

Reporting to the Senior Safety Officer – LEP, you will be responsible for ensuring the safety section maintains an effective and visible presence in the workplace with regards to health and safety management
Your duties will include but are not limited to the following:
- Assist with the coordination and implementation of LMC’s HSE management system to a standard that is compatible with international practice and undertaken in a timely and cost-effective way.
- Provision of advice, support, and coaching to contractors and employees alike about management of health and safety risks.
- Conduct workplace safety audits and inspections across the site.
- Administer safety-related documentation and records.
- Monitor and report on site incident trends, audit reports, and corrective action undertaken.
- Facilitate and participate in incident investigations, risk assessments, and any other safety forums.
- Oversee health and safety-related training and presentations in your unit of operation.
- Identification and implementation of continuous improvement opportunities.
- Proactively identify issues as they arise and identify solutions.
- Accountable for the completion of all tasks identified in the Management Operating System (MOS) to the specified quality and timelines as assigned to this role
- Develop, implement, and maintain safe work procedures and promote high safety and health awareness. Promote and comply with the LMC Occupational Health & Safety Policy.
- Be responsible for the safe and efficient operation of the team.
- Ensure appropriate facilities, procedures, and workforce competence to achieve legal compliance, incident prevention, and the achievement of tasks in an environmentally sustainable manner.
- Develop continuous improvement targets for the function and drive and measure the achievement of these targets.
- Ensure the development and maintenance of up-to-date job procedures for all tasks performed within the team.
To be considered for the position, you must meet the following requirements:
- Full Grade 12 School Certificate.
- Diploma in OHS or equivalent
- Knowledge of dam construction/Tailings Storage facility
- A minimum of 3 years post-qualification experience with at least 2 years in a mining and dam construction.
- Competent in incident/accident investigation.
- Knowledge of civil AND Earth works
- Be physically fit and be able to pass a pre-employment medical examination and annual screening.
- Working knowledge of safety systems, preferably ISO 45001.
- Demonstrated success as an effective leader.
- Demonstrated ability to lead a team safely and improve team safety awareness.
- High level understanding of all relevant legislation affecting the employment and safety of persons in the mining industry in Zambia.
- Demonstrated application of continuous improvement ideas Strong report writing and presentation skills.
- Member of relevant Professional Body
- Must have good communication skills in the English language.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office (Excel, PowerPoint, Word).
- Clean Class B or C manual Driver’s license.
