Young Professionals Program Coordinator at the African Development Bank
The African Development Bank (AfDB) is seeking a Young Professionals Program (YPP) Coordinator to manage and enhance its innovative Human Resources strategies, policies, and frameworks.
This position, based in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire, offers an exciting opportunity to contribute to the development of young professionals while promoting economic growth and social progress across Africa.
The role will involve a wide array of responsibilities, including overseeing the full cycle of the Young Professionals Program (YPP), ensuring alignment with the Bank’s strategic objectives, and developing talent pipelines for future leaders in Africa.
About the African Development Bank
Established in 1964, the African Development Bank is the leading pan-African development institution. With 81 member states, including 54 in Africa, the Bank aims to promote economic growth and social progress across the continent. The Bank supports transformative projects that address Africa’s most pressing challenges, including poverty, infrastructure development, and sustainable economic growth. In alignment with its Ten-Year Strategy (2024-2033), the Bank focuses on five key priority areas — energy, agro-business, industrialization, integration, and improving the quality of life across the continent.
The Role of the Young Professionals Program Coordinator
The YPP Coordinator will play a crucial role in supporting the Bank’s goal to enhance its human resources and foster young talent for leadership roles. The role’s main objective is to manage and implement the full cycle of the Young Professionals Program, working directly with senior management to ensure the program effectively meets the Bank’s objectives while contributing to the personal and professional growth of participants.
Key responsibilities will include coordinating recruitment, performance management, mentoring, and career development, alongside providing advisory services to both the young professionals and their line managers.
Key Responsibilities
1. Program Coordination and Management
The YPP Coordinator will oversee the full lifecycle of the program, ensuring it meets the Bank’s objectives. This involves collaborating with senior management to determine the number of YPs required, as well as the skills mix needed for each cycle. The Coordinator will manage rotations, performance evaluations, and career development strategies, ensuring that the YPs gain diverse and impactful experiences within the Bank.
2. Talent Acquisition
The Coordinator will handle the recruitment and selection process for new YPs. This includes advertising vacancies, coordinating assessments and interviews, and ensuring that selected candidates meet the Bank’s strategic and operational needs. The Coordinator will also oversee the YP recruitment process with the support of recruitment teams and external partners.
3. Performance Management and Development
The Coordinator will ensure that YPs receive appropriate training and mentoring, including on-the-job learning, soft skills development, and language training if necessary. The Coordinator will also organize performance evaluations at the midpoint and end of each rotation, providing essential feedback to the YPs and informing management of their progress.
4. Advisory Services
The Coordinator will provide ongoing support and guidance to YPs, helping them navigate their rotations and career progression. The role involves advising YPs on their career paths, ensuring that each rotation aligns with both the Bank’s objectives and the YP’s personal aspirations. The YP Coordinator will also facilitate the transition from developmental assignments to professional-level positions within the Bank.
5. Tracking and Reporting
The Coordinator will maintain detailed records on YP career progression and manage the tracking system for current and former YPs. The role will also include preparing an Annual YP Report for senior management and stakeholders to assess program outcomes and make recommendations for improvements.
6. Graduation and Post-Program Integration
The YPP Coordinator will oversee the transition of YPs into regular positions within the Bank after program completion. This includes identifying suitable post-graduation positions in alignment with the Bank’s needs and the YPs’ career aspirations.
Qualifications and Experience
The ideal candidate should have:
- A Master’s degree in Human Resources Management, Organizational Development, Social Sciences, Business Administration, or related fields.
- A minimum of five (5) years of project management experience, preferably in an international organization, and the ability to navigate a multicultural environment.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, including experience in presenting to diverse audiences.
- Proven ability to handle sensitive issues and work in a high-pressure, deadline-driven environment.
- Strong organizational skills, with the ability to manage multiple priorities and coordinate effectively with various stakeholders.
- Experience in learning and development environments, particularly in managing training programs and performance evaluation systems.
- Fluency in English and/or French, with proficiency in the other language being a plus.
