ZABS is a statutory body currently operating under the Standards Act No. 4 of 2017. Under this Act, ZABS is mandated to provide Standardization and Quality Assurance services to industry in order to support production of goods and services of acceptable quality for national, regional and international markets. ZABS also acts as a link between local industry and regional and international standardization and quality assurance (SQA) organizations.
The Bureau invites applications from suitably qualified and experienced candidates to fill the following vacant positions:
LABORATORY ANALYST – CHROMATOGRAPHY (ZABS 5 x1)
JOB PURPOSE
To undertake test work and research in Chromatography Laboratory for pesticides residues and verification in water, food and animal feeds, Mycotoxins analysis in food, feed, residue antibiotics, vitamin analysis, organic pollutant such as POPs and PCBs, PAHs in petroleum etc. To provide analytical data and information to meet the expectations of superiors and clients. The performance of work will be carried out in line with the requirements of the Laboratory Quality System, ISO/IEC 17025 and Accredited Bodies.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Ensure Implementation and maintenance of quality assurance protocols in line with requirements of ISO 17025.
- Conduct Research to establish appropriate analytical methods and procedures and recommend suitable equipment and consumables.
- Undertake routine and non-routine test work and provide analytical data to satisfaction of superiors and clients.
- Competent in handling the following equipment: VICAM Fluorescence Analyser, HPLC, GC-MS and GC.
- Undertake quality control measures to ensure credibility of test results and measurements. Assist superiors in maintaining a credible quality assurance system. Facilitate remedial measures for operational concerns and maintain technical records.
- Compile accurate and timely Test Reports on work carried out to meet agreed schedules and facilitate decision making. Respond to customer requests and provide professional advice. Issue customized quotations and invoices for test performed by the laboratory.
- Ensure that the laboratory participates in suitable inter-laboratory comparison and proficiency Testing Schemes and evaluate results to ensure reliability of laboratory results. Investigate outliers and recommend corrective action.
- Ensure all materials, consumables and equipment critical to running of laboratory are effectively monitored and replenished, and comply to required standards. Prepare technical specifications for procurement of laboratory materials and expedite orders.
- Ensure equipment performance, service and maintenance, calibration and traceability are effectively monitored.
- Identify training needs of staff and undertake staff training and orientation of new staff. Maintain discipline and ensure smooth and effective running of operations. Conduct employee performance reviews and competence verification tests.
- Schedule staff leave and arrange for coverage.
- Ensure that appropriate environmental, health and safety precautions are identified and complied with to avoid injury to persons and damage to the environment.
- Ensure safe and timely disposal of laboratory waste and tested samples.
B. QUALIFICATIONS, EXPERIENCE & PERSONAL ATTRIBUTES
- Grade 12 Certificate
- Bachelor’s Degree in Chemistry / Chemical Engineering or any related field
- ZAQA qualifications verification certificates
- Certification in Chromatography techniques will be an added advantage
- Three years minimum relevant work experience in Chemistry and/or Chromatography laboratory
- Able to clearly and produce accurate reports
- Candidate should have Management Skills, Leadership skills and Interpersonal Skills, Project management skills will be an added advantage
- Computer literate (including use of spreadsheets, word processing, PowerPoint and internet, calculation in uncertainty in measurements
- Supervisory skills and ability to work independently.
CONDITIONS
The position of ICT Manager is offered on a fixed-term contract, while the positions of Procurement Officer and Laboratory Analyst – Chromatography are on permanent and pensionable terms of service.
