Background

Zambia Sugar Plc is an ABF Group sugar company and is the leading sugar producer in Zambia. Its main activities are the growing of sugar cane, the production and marketing of sugar and other sugar downstream products.

Zambia Sugar carries out Off-Crop maintenance works in the Factory for a duration of up to four (4) months and invites applications from suitably qualified and experienced persons to fill Off-Crop positions in the Manufacturing Department.

Overall Responsibility

The position reports to the Maintenance Foreman. The successful candidate will be responsible for supporting maintenance to achieve maximum plant availability and equipment capacity, ensuring compliance with minimum operating standards and/or work instructions.

Key Performance Areas

  • Implement preventative/reactive/predictive maintenance initiatives and plans to reduce costs and downtime.
  • Promote cross-discipline functional and stakeholder engagement as well as teamwork.
  • Ensure plant realizes agreed capacity (targets) and teams address areas for improvement.
  • Execute stop day or opportunity stops/shut down activities timeously.
  • Identify personal Learning and Development needs.
  • Carry out plumbing and piping to achieve maximum plant availability and equipment capacity as per OEMs and ABF procedures.
  • Perform pipe cutting, threading and connecting galvanised, steam, copper and PVC (polyvinyl chloride) pipes up to 100mm.
  • Repair and install work on steam, air, water and oil piping systems.
  • Install and maintain gutters and flashing systems.
  • Install piping, sanitary and electrical geysers.
  • Work hand-in-hand with Civils Department and assist from time to time on plumbing matters.
  • Remove and replace defective valves up to 100mm in diameter size.
  • Use the offhand grinding machines.
  • Ensure that all defects identified during specific route inspections are documented on the checklist feedback with immediate action plan to mitigate significant risks for closure.
  • Maintain an in-depth knowledge of the condition of pipe thread cutting equipment on a continuous basis and take responsibility for failures resulting from inadequate equipment-specific inspection.
  • Contribute to the RCA process in your section possessing a positive mindset and elimination of failure.
  • Monitor own section’s KPIs, understand your contribution to them, contribute to solutions to resolve out-of-spec KPIs and maintain actions to sustain KPIs being within specification.
  • Execute work for stop day, shut-down and off-crop maintenance activities on plant equipment and carry out the plumbing works timeously without delay to production.
  • Strictly adhere to ABF’s procedures, policies and guidelines, including those relating to SHERQ, Competition Law and Anti-Bribery and Corruption (ABC).

Qualifications and Experience

  • Grade 12 Certificate.
  • Trade Test Level 1 Certificate in Plumbing.
  • 2+ years post experience in a robust plant environment.
  • 2+ years’ experience in the sugar industry is an added advantage.
  • Craft Certificate in Plumbing and Sheet Metal will be an advantage.
