The Assistant Electrical Expert supports the Lead Electrician in guiding and assisting semi-skilled electricians and helpers on site. This role contributes to electrical installation, maintenance, and testing tasks, ensuring that work is carried out safely and in line with project standards. The Assistant Electrical Expert also assists in mentoring and developing local staff but does not carry formal supervisory or legal responsibilities.

Minimum Qualifications & Requirements

Education & Certification:

Matric / Grade 12 Certificate or equivalent
Progress toward or enrollment in an Electrical Trade Test Certificate or relevant NQF Level 3–4 qualification preferred
Basic electrical safety and site induction training completed
Experience:

3–5 years’ practical experience in semi-skilled electrical work, preferably in mining or industrial environments
Experience assisting with team coordination and supporting training of junior or local staff

Key Responsibilities

Assist the Lead Electrician in guiding and supporting electricians and helpers during daily tasks
Contribute to electrical installation activities, including cable pulling, wiring, terminations, and basic fault-finding under supervision
Support compliance with safety regulations, project specifications (including SANS), and quality standards
Help train and mentor local semi-skilled and unskilled electrical workers under guidance
Maintain tools, equipment, and work areas in good condition
Record work progress and report issues, delays, or safety concerns to the Lead Electrician
Promote safe work practices and actively participate in toolbox talks and risk assessments
Assist with pre-commissioning testing and inspections as directed

Core Skills & Competencies

Basic knowledge of electrical installation, maintenance, and testing
Ability to support and encourage semi-skilled electricians without formal legal authority
Basic ability to interpret electrical drawings and instructions
Strong teamwork and communication skills
High awareness of health, safety, and environmental requirements
Willingness to assist with training and mentoring of local staff

Working Conditions

Work in remote project environments with exposure to dust, heat, noise, and varying weather conditions
Full PPE compliance and adherence to safety policies are mandatory
May involve shift work, overtime, and physically demanding tasks
