People’s Process on Housing and Poverty in Zambia (PPHPZ) is a local NGO with 17 years’ experience working with partner organizations, grassroots -led movements and Informal Settlement Networks (ISNs) in rural and urban poor communities in all the ten provinces of Zambia. PPHPZ supports federated networks of the rural and urban poor to address governance issues at local and national level so as to address inequitable access to land, housing, infrastructure, water, and sanitation for the majority poor in the country. To date, the organization has helped with the formation of the largest movements of poor people that have constituted themselves into the Zambia Homeless and Poor People’s Federation with a total membership of over 49 000 consisting of families from poor rural, urban and peri-urban communities, who have mobilized themselves and joined hands to fight the various facets of poverty through savings schemes, Cooperatives with a membership of over 500 members mobilized around housing rights and an informal network of informal settlement dwellers (ISN) with a membership of over 10 000 people that form the social accountability platform to champion community advocacy and provide checks and balances to established and decentralized local level structures and decision making platforms.
