VACANCIES – GLOBAL ENVIRONMENT FACILITY (GEF) 8 PROJECT

The International Crane Foundation (ICF) is the world's leading organization dedicated to the conservation of cranes and the ecosystems, watersheds, and flyways on which they depend. In Africa, ICF works to secure viable populations of the four threatened crane species, Wattled Crane, Grey Crowned Crane, Blue Crane, and Black Crowned Crane, through science, partnerships, community engagement, and sustainable landscape management.

In Zambia, ICF, in partnership with the Government of the Republic of Zambia and WWF, is implementing two flagship Global Environment Facility (GEF) projects under the Kafue Flats Restoration Partnership:

Kafue Flats Wildlife, Habitat, Health and Livelihoods Project (KaF-Wild); and

Kafue Flats Climate Resilience and Adaptation Project (KaF-Adapt).

Together, these five-year projects seek to restore the Kafue Flats ecosystem while improving biodiversity conservation, strengthening climate resilience, supporting sustainable livelihoods, and enhancing the well-being of communities across the landscape.

Applications are invited from suitably qualified candidates for the following vacant positions under the Global Environment Facility (GEF) 8 Project:

1. COMMUNICATIONS OFFICER

Based in: Lusaka Zambia with some travel

Reports directly to: The Project Manager and Technical Coordinator

Responsibilities:

• Develop, implement, and maintain the joint communications strategy for the KaF-Wild and KaF-Adapt projects in collaboration with the Project Management Unit, implementing partners, and sub-grantees.
• Lead media relations by building and maintaining relationships with traditional and digital media, coordinating media interviews, press conferences, speaking engagements, and promoting the visibility of the GEF partnership.
• Develop and produce high-quality communications and marketing materials, ensuring compliance with ICF editorial, graphic, branding standards, and the GEF Communication and Visibility Policy.
• Support digital communications by creating and sharing compelling stories for the ICF website and social media platforms, monitoring online content, and providing appropriate responses and guidance.
• Coordinate communications for project events and oversee photography, videography, and other multimedia requirements in collaboration with the External Affairs Team and project staff.
• Prepare and publish newsletters and communication products, including the GEF quarterly newsletter and the ICF Africa quarterly newsletter, highlighting project activities, achievements, and lessons learned.
• Develop, maintain, and archive communication resources, including publications, press releases, media coverage, photographs, audio-visual materials, digital assets, and web content.
• Prepare annual communications work plans and budgets, monitor implementation, and provide communications inputs to project reports, Steering Committee papers, Technical Committee papers, and other donor reporting requirements.

Qualifications and Requirements:

• Applicants should possess:
• Bachelor’s degree in communications, Journalism, Marketing, Public Relations, or a related field.
• Minimum of three (3) years' relevant experience in communications, media relations, marketing, or public relations. Experience with an NGO, particularly a conservation organization, is an added advantage.
• Excellent written and verbal communication, storytelling, editing, and proofreading skills, with strong command of English.
• Experience in digital communications, social media, graphic design, photography, or videography. Video editing skills are an added advantage.
• Strong organizational, interpersonal, and stakeholder engagement skills, with the ability to manage multiple priorities and work collaboratively.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications and familiarity with digital communication and media platforms.
• Ability to work independently with minimal supervision while maintaining professionalism and integrity.

2. DRIVER

Based in: Lusaka Zambia with extensive travel within the project landscape

Reports to: Project Accountant

Responsibilities:

• Provide safe, timely, and professional transportation for project staff, consultants, partners, and official visitors within Lusaka and across the Kafue Flats project landscape.
• Transport project equipment, materials, and supplies securely to field sites and support field missions, stakeholder engagements, training activities, and workshops.
• Conduct daily vehicle inspections and ensure assigned vehicles are clean, roadworthy, and maintained in accordance with ICF policies and Zambian road traffic regulations.
• Maintain accurate vehicle logbooks, fuel records, mileage, and maintenance documentation, and coordinate routine servicing and repairs.
• Ensure compliance with vehicle insurance, licensing, roadworthiness, and other statutory requirements, promptly reporting accidents, defects, or incidents.
• Uphold the highest standards of safety, confidentiality, professionalism, and compliance with ICF policies, including environmental and social safeguards during field operations.
• Provide logistical and administrative support, including the delivery and collection of documents, supplies, and equipment, and assist with office and procurement-related errands as required.
• Safeguard project vehicles and associated assets while contributing to the efficient implementation of project activities.

Qualifications and Requirements:

• The ideal candidate should possess:
• Full Grade Twelve (12) School Certificate or equivalent.
• A valid Zambian driver's licence -C class with a clean driving record and experience driving manual transmission vehicles.
• A minimum of five (5) years' professional driving experience, preferably with NGOs, donor-funded projects, government, or private institutions, including driving on rural and off-road terrain.
• Sound knowledge of vehicle maintenance and the ability to perform routine vehicle checks; basic mechanical skills are an added advantage.
• A valid Defensive Driving Certificate and First Aid certification will be an added advantage.
• Good spoken and written English; knowledge of local languages spoken within the project area is an added advantage.
• Basic computer and smartphone skills for communication, trip coordination, and record-keeping.
• High standards of integrity, professionalism, reliability, and a strong commitment to safety, with excellent interpersonal skills.
• Willingness to travel extensively within the project landscape and work flexible hours, including occasional weekends, as required.
