About the role:
Our client is seeking an Earthwork Foreman to be responsible for the day-to-day supervision and coordination of earthworks activities on construction, mining, infrastructure, or civil engineering projects. The role requires a highly experienced construction professional capable of managing earthmoving crews, heavy equipment, materials, productivity, quality, and safety while ensuring that works are completed according to approved drawings, specifications, project schedules, and company standards. The ideal candidate will have 10 or more years of practical earthworks experience, including significant experience supervising large earthmoving operations.
Key Responsibilities:
- Supervise daily earthworks activities, including:
- Site clearing and grubbing.
- Bulk excavation and cut-to-fill operations.
- Embankment construction.
- Trenching and backfilling.
- Road formation and subgrade preparation.
- Borrow-pit and material-winning operations.
- Stockpiling and material handling.
- Rock excavation where applicable.
- Drainage and associated civil works.
- Compaction and final trimming.
- Interpret construction drawings, specifications, method statements, and work instructions.
- Plan daily activities and allocate labour, equipment, and resources effectively.
- Ensure earthworks are carried out to the required lines, levels, grades, slopes, and tolerances.
- Coordinate excavation, hauling, spreading, watering, grading, and compaction activities.
- Monitor production rates and ensure daily and weekly targets are achieved.
- Identify and resolve site constraints that may affect productivity or programme.
Plant and Equipment Management
- Coordinate the efficient use of excavators, bulldozers, graders, loaders, rollers, water bowsers, dump trucks, and other earthmoving equipment.
- Monitor equipment utilization, productivity, and availability.
- Carry out daily plant and equipment inspections with operators.
- Report equipment defects and coordinate with the maintenance team to minimize downtime.
- Ensure operators use machinery safely and efficiently.
- Monitor fuel consumption and minimize unnecessary plant idling and wastage.
Minimum Requirements:
- Diploma or Certificate in Civil Engineering, Construction, Earthworks, or a related field
- 10+ years of practical experience in earthworks, civil construction, mining, infrastructure, or related projects.
- Proven experience supervising large earthmoving operations and construction crews.
- Strong knowledge of earthworks activities, including excavation, cut-and-fill, embankments, trenching, road formation, drainage, compaction, and material handling.
- Ability to read and interpret construction drawings, specifications, method statements, and work instructions.
- Experience coordinating and supervising heavy earthmoving equipment, including excavators, bulldozers, graders, loaders, rollers, water bowsers, and dump trucks.
- Ability to plan daily work, allocate labour, equipment, and resources, and monitor productivity.
- Good understanding of site safety, quality control, and environmental requirements.
- Ability to monitor production targets and identify and resolve site constraints and operational challenges.
- Good leadership, communication, and team-management skills.
- Ability to work under pressure and meet project deadlines.
- Experience conducting or coordinating daily plant and equipment inspections and reporting defects.
- Ability to work effectively with equipment operators, site management, engineers, surveyors, and other project personnel.
Compensation:
The incumbent will receive a competitive salary commensurate with experience.
