ABOUT ZAMBIA SUGAR PLC

Zambia Sugar Plc. is an ABF Group sugar company and is the leading sugar producer in Zambia. Its main activities are the growing of sugar cane, the production and marketing of sugar and other sugar downstream products.

The company invites applications from suitably qualified and experienced persons to fill this position under the Manufacturing Department.

OVERALL RESPONSIBILITY

The position reports to the Factory Manager. The successful incumbent will be responsible for providing direction, technical guidance and leadership in maintenance to ensure maximum plant availability and design capacity.

KEY PERFORMANCE AREAS

  • Fulfil the statutory role of the site Appointed Person, ensuring full compliance with the Electricity Act, Factories Act, and local regulation, providing leadership and ensuring compliance with relevant legislation and factories regulations.
  • Contribute to the development of maintenance philosophy, plans, goals and KPIs where required.
  • Drive rigorous performance management, biased towards rewarding strong performance and compliance with critical behaviors, and including managing consequences where required.
  • Oversee planning and execution of maintenance activities and boiler operations to ensure safety, efficiency, quality control, budgetary control, service, and cost-effective management of resources.
  • Appoint, assess competence, authorise, and continuously oversee Responsible Electrical Personnel / authorised persons to ensure safe operations.
  • Drive a zero-harm culture by enforcing electrical safety standards, e.g. NFPA 70E aligned and Group Standards, and ensuring electrical hazards are identified, assessed, and controlled.
  • Develop and manage all maintenance budgets, liaising with finance business partner and optimization team in line with Group timetable, with the objective to optimize maintenance costs.
  • Ensure that each area of plant is maintained, continuously improving the equipment maintenance strategies, to achieve maximum mechanical availability and equipment capacity cost effectively.
  • Lead internal and external audits of electrical & instrumentations installations and maintenance processes; ensure findings are closed out with evidence and no repeat non-conformities.
  • Identify Off-Crop & Stop Day work and oversee planning, scheduling, implementation and progress monitoring of maintenance activities.
  • Adopt and embed agreed best practices, frameworks and minimum standards for all aspects of planned maintenance as guided by the ABF Asset Management (iAMP) program.
  • Embed world-class maintenance practices, standardised procedures, and engineering doctrines across Electrical.
  • Identify areas where maintenance, equipment performance and quality management can be improved and manage the implementation of systems and processes to make improvements.
  • Establish and lead a problem-solving approach throughout the function and cross functional to identify and address problems and improvement opportunities.
  • Develop capability on the job and hold teams accountable for performance.
  • Manage the implementation of effective risk mitigation measures to reduce quality incidents to zero major or repeat findings during audits and inspections.
  • Identify areas where quality, safety and food safety management can be improved and manage the implementation of systems and processes to make improvements.
  • Set direction, implement and monitor effective team communication processes to drive best maintenance practices to support stable operations and sustained reliability performance.
  • Lead and execute the iAMP program, agreed preventative / preemptive maintenance processes and CMMS practices on site.
  • Establish and maintain effective relationships with key maintenance & engineering service providers.
  • Monitor, manage and provide evidence of equipment technical risk compliance through robust governance processes to maintain adherence to Group risk and assurance standards and requirements.
  • Select and manage key partners for high-risk work; ensure contractor control, permits, competencies, and quality assurance.
  • Provide input into business cases for key capital projects and support delivery, ensuring required economic and desired outcomes are delivered on.
  • Identify and monitor KPIs to track performance and flag any issues.
  • Promote and adhere to ABF’s procedures, policies and guidelines, including those relating to SHERQ, Competition Law and Anti-Bribery and Corruption (ABC).

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE

  • Full Grade 12 Certificate.
  • Degree or equivalent in Electrical/Mechanical Engineering (GCC required for ABF Sugar South Africa).
  • Minimum of 10 years post-qualification experience in heavy current electrical, Control & Instrumentation engineering within a manufacturing or heavy industry environment.
  • Minimum 5 years in a senior leadership role managing large teams and multi-functional operations.
  • Experience managing large-scale maintenance planning (SAP 4HANA).
  • Suitably qualified applicants must provide certificates which have been verified by the Zambia Qualifications Authority (ZAQA).
