Job description:

Specific Job Responsibility

Waste Management:

  • Develop, implement, and monitor site-wide waste management plans covering solid, liquid, and hazardous waste.
  • Ensure waste segregation, safe storage, transportation, and disposal practices in compliance with ZEMA and company standards.
  • Manage waste contractors and internal waste handling personnel.
  • Oversee landfill operations and treatment systems, including leachate and effluent control.
  • Drive continuous improvement initiatives in waste minimization, reuse, and recycling.

Environmental Health:

  • Monitor and assess environmental health risks, including water and air quality, sanitation, and vector-borne diseases.
  • Implement programs on potable water supply, wastewater treatment, and food safety within the mine site.
  • Support occupational health programs by monitoring environmental exposures (e.g., dust, noise, chemicals).
  • Conduct regular inspections and audits of camp and facility hygiene conditions.

Environmental Projects:

  • Lead environmental improvement and rehabilitation projects (e.g., revegetation, erosion control, pollution abatement).
  • Manage project budgets, schedules, and contractor performance for environmental initiatives.
  • Support permitting, Environmental Impact Assessments (EIAs), and Environmental Management Plans (EMPs).
  • Maintain accurate environmental records and prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual environmental reports.

Team Leadership and Training:

  • Supervise and mentor junior environmental staff and contractors.
  • Develop and deliver training programs on waste management, environmental health, and sustainability.
  • Promote environmental awareness and best practices across departments.

 Stakeholder Engagement:

  • Liaise with government agencies, NGOs, and community stakeholders on environmental health and sustainability programs.
  • Collaborate with community development teams on environmental outreach and education.

Job Specific Competencies

  • Ability to enhance compliance with the Zambian Environmental Legal requirements, corporate commitments and international best practices.
  • Must be able to demonstrate Environmental law and compliance requirements
  • Environmental management in general
  • Knowledge and experience with Environmental Management System (EMS).
  • Site-based position at a remote mining operation
  • Fieldwork in varying environmental conditions, including use of PPE and adherence to safety standards.
  • May involve interaction with local communities and off-site stakeholders.

  • Strong leadership and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and projects simultaneously.
  • Excellent problem-solving and analytical capabilities.
