Responsible for the installations, maintenance and repair of LIT Zambia fiber optic networks and sites / Points of Presence (PoPs). The incumbent is also responsible for first line intervention on LIT Zambia network equipment faults in the assigned area of operation, for the purposes of ensuring service quality and availability meets agreed service levels.

To operate effectively, the incumbent shall function as the specialist in charge of field operations in the assigned area of operation, ensuring that installations, preventive, and corrective maintenance are done in accordance with LIT Zambia maintenance guidelines and consistent with globally accepted standards.

Responsibilities:

1.     New installations

  • Install new optic fiber lines and terminal network equipment, including splicing and terminations in accordance with LIT ZM installation guidelines.
  • Work with the NOC and service delivery teams for end-to-end tests during commissioning of new fiber projects in line with work orders and client service requirements.
  • Liaise with clients to plan installations ensuring that the client is kept abreast of progress, support requirements and challenges ahead of time.

2.     Operations and Maintenance

  • Troubleshoot and repair network faults in the given area of operation as assigned by the Network Operations Centre (NOC) and / or supervisors.
  • Ensure that all assigned faults are resolved within agreed MTTRs for the fault category.
  • Ensure that preventive maintenance of all sites (points of presence), fiber optic and network infrastructure as well as the associated power equipment in the assigned area of operation is done, so that this infrastructure is kept clean and operational, that all fiber optic cores are patched through and that the optical levels are within design limits.
  • Use AI tools for the analysis of optical level and failure trend information collected from terminal network equipment to pinpoint failure risks and address these risks proactively, thereby avoiding outages in the assigned area of operation.
  • Plan, implement network optimization projects in liaison with Engineer.
  • Conduct routine checks for network (Access, Metro and Backbone) and power equipment.
  • Address customer service calls for client devices and services managed by LIT ZM, troubleshooting and repairing as required to ensure the client services are always up and running.
  • Engage clients to address concerns and provide technical support.

3.     Health and Safety

  • Ensure that all safety, health, and environmental standards are adhered to before, during and after working on fiber optic infrastructure.
  • Analyze equipment/node/resources performance over time, trend analysis and forecasting to advise on actions to be taken to eliminate downtime due to outages.

Minimum Requirements

  • Diploma telecommunications / City and guilds T5 Equivalent
  • Fiber Optic Installation, repair and Maintenance certification will be an advantage.
  • EIZ membership
  • Must have a clean and valid driving license.
  • Good Communication Skills and the ability to express complex technical concepts effectively, both verbally and in writing.

Working knowledge required

  • Experience in the installations, operation, and maintenance of at least one of the following domains: VSAT, Microwave radio, wireless, IP networks
  • CCNA/HCNA based knowledge of IP.
  • Basic project management
  • Basic Electrical and Power installations
