The Geomatics Engineer is responsible for the accurate capture, processing, and management of spatial data to support the planning and implementation of rural electrification projects. This role combines technical surveying expertise with GIS capabilities to produce reliable maps and spatial diagrams while ensuring compliance with national standards.

Key Responsibilities

1. Geospatial Data Management

  • Conduct field surveys using GNSS/GPS, total stations, and drones
  • Process LiDAR data, aerial photography, and satellite imagery
  • Maintain geodatabases in ArcGIS/QGIS for electrification planning
  • Establish survey control networks with permanent beacons

2. Mapping & Diagram Production

  • Generate 1:50,000 scale base maps for rural electrification
  • Create right-of-way diagrams for power line corridors
  • Produce land parcel maps for substation site acquisition

3. Quality & Compliance

  • Implement ISO 19100 series standards for geographic information
  • Maintain Zambia National Grid coordinate references
  • Conduct accuracy assessments of third-party survey data

4. Risk Management

  • Update social/environmental risk registers for project areas
  • Identify cultural heritage sites and sensitive ecosystems

Required Competencies

Technical Skills

  • Advanced CAD/GIS software proficiency (AutoCAD, ArcGIS Pro)
  • Expertise in geodetic surveying (WGS84 to local datum transformations)
  • Knowledge of photogrammetry and remote sensing techniques

Professional Attributes

  • Analytical approach to spatial problem-solving
  • Stakeholder negotiation for land access agreements
  • Technical report writing for feasibility studies

Qualifications & Experience

Mandatory

  • Grade 12 Certificate
  • BSc in Geomatics Engineering (ZAQA-validated)
  • EIZ & SIZ Membership (Active)
  • 3+ years in infrastructure surveying

Preferred

  • Experience with rural electrification projects
  • Certification in Drone Piloting (RPAS)
  • Knowledge of Zambia Electricity Regulatory Authority standards

Work Conditions

✔ 80% field work in remote locations
✔ Use of 4WD vehicles and off-grid survey equipment
✔ Exposure to wildlife hazards and challenging terrain
