Background
Peace Corps Zambia is one of the largest Peace Corps programs worldwide. The first Volunteers came to Zambia in 1994, and since then over 2,000 Volunteers have served. PSCs and Volunteers follow Peace Corps’ Mission to promote world peace and friendship by fulfilling three goals. These goals are (1) to help the people of interested countries in meeting their need for trained men and women; (2) to help promote a better understanding of Americans on the part of the peoples served; and (3) to help promote a better understanding of other peoples on the part of Americans.
Objectives of the position
Under the supervision of the General Services Manager (GSM), the Janitor is responsible for performing all custodial work at the Peace Corps office and maintaining clean and tidy office spaces and grounds. S/he would also perform manual work by helping to load and unload Peace Corps property in storage areas and motor vehicles.
Tasks & Deliverables
- Cleans and maintains offices/public spaces at Peace Corps Zambia Head Office through daily cleaning, sweeping, mopping, scrubbing, and waxing-polishing floors.
- Clean, disinfect, and deodorize lavatories and other rest room fixtures at least twice per day.
- Clean staff kitchen areas.
- Clean, dust, and polish all furniture and accessories - furniture, shelving, frames, bulletin boards, windows, and doors.
- Keep electronic equipment free of dust and debris.
- Ensure proper disposal of trash and organic waste.
- Wash beddings and towels for Volunteer Bunk House.
- Track cleaning supplies and request replenishment as needed.
- Unload incoming supplies to Peace Corps, including opening pallets and packaging boxes in storage areas.
- Deliver requested supplies and/or furniture to respective offices.
- Help to move furniture in offices and rearrange as requested.
- Shred papers.
- Performs other duties as may be assigned.
Minimum requirements
In order to be selected for this position, the applicant must be legally eligible to work in Zambia, and must submit an application that clearly documents how they meet each of the following requirements:
- Three years janitorial work experience in a professional office setting.
- Demonstrated ability to provide janitorial services in a professional office setting and in residences
- Ability to work in multi-cultural environment with at least two years’ experience working for an international organization with employees from different countries.
- Ability to speak and understand English.
- Ability to perform strenuous physical work.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Completion of senior secondary school.
- Possession of the appropriate Regional Security Office security clearance – either on file with Peace Corps or another USG Agency in-country (strongly preferred).
