Job Purpose:
Responsible for laboratory-based tasks, which include sampling, testing, measuring, recording and analysing results in biological, chemical, physical and life sciences. They also provide all the required technical support to enable the laboratory to function effectively whilst adhering to correct procedures and health and safety guidelines.
Main Duties and Accountabilities:
- Performing laboratory tests in order to produce reliable and precise data to support scientific investigations;
- Carrying out routine tasks accurately and following strict methodologies to carry out analyses;
- Preparing specimens and samples;
- Constructing, maintaining and operating standard laboratory equipment
- Ensuring the laboratory is well-stocked and resourced;
- Recording and sometimes interpreting results to present to senior colleagues;
- Using computers and performing mathematical calculations for the preparation of graphs;
- Keeping up to date with technical developments, especially those which can save time and improve reliability;
- Demonstrating practical procedures;
- Conducting searches on identified topics relevant to the research;
- Following and ensuring strict safety procedures and safety checks; and
- Perform any other duties as may be assigned by the Supervisor.
Qualifications and Experience:
- Grade 12 or Form V Certificate (or its equivalent) with 5 “0” levels including English Language and Mathematics;
- Diploma in Fishery Science or Fisheries and Aquaculture or in a relevant field;
- A Bachelor of Science Degree in Fishery Science or Fisheries and Aquaculture or in a relevant field will be added advantage;
- Minimum of two (2) years of work experience in Fisheries and Aquaculture Production; and
- Must be a member of a relevant professional body.
Required Competencies and Behavioral Attributes:
- Proficient in biological and microbiological techniques;
- Knowledge of biomass conversion techniques – pyrolysis, fermentation, anaerobic digestion;
- Ability to use softwares for data handling (e.g. R / RStudio);
- Proficient in sample preparation, biomass analysis, and enzymatic assays;
- Knowledge of Zambia’s energy landscape and sustainability goals;
- Commitment to innovation, safety and continuous learning;
- Familiarity with laboratory instrumentation and data logging tools;
- Passion for renewable energy and its role in sustainable development;
- Strong problem solving skills and attention to detail;
- Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team;
- Strong communication skills; and
- Good interpersonal skills.

- Immediate Supervisor: Head of Department
- Salary Scale: PSS06
