Purpose of the role:
The Mechanical Assembly Technician will perform the assembly, installation, alignment, inspection, testing, and commissioning support of Hitachi EH4000 Rigid Dump Trucks at Kansanshi Mine Site. The role ensures all assembly activities are completed in accordance with HCMZ standards, OEM specifications, engineering drawings, and quality requirements while supporting assembly efficiency, production targets, safety compliance, and customer satisfaction.
Key Duties and Responsibilities:
The Mechanical Assembly Technician will be required to perform the following tasks:
1. Mechanical Assembly
- Assemble EH4000 dump truck structures and major machine components.
- Install engines, transmissions, wheel groups, final drives, steering systems, braking systems, and powertrain components.
- Assemble cooling, lubrication, fuel, and mechanical support systems.
- Ensure all assembly activities comply with OEM specifications and procedures.
2. Hydraulic Assembly
- Install hydraulic pumps, cylinders, hoses, valves, and piping systems.
- Ensure contamination control standards are maintained during assembly.
- Verify correct routing and installation of hydraulic systems.
- Conduct hydraulic assembly inspections and quality checks.
3. Quality Inspection & Verification
- Conduct assembly quality inspections throughout each build stage.
- Perform dimensional inspections, fit-up inspections, and torque verification checks.
- Complete OEM assembly checklists and quality documentation.
- Identify and rectify assembly defects and non-conformances.
4. Testing & Commissioning Support
- Participate in pre-delivery inspections (PDI).
- Support machine testing and commissioning activities.
- Verify machine readiness prior to customer handover.
- Assist with final quality acceptance inspections.
5. Safety, Health & Environment
- Comply with HCMZ, OEM, and customer safety requirements.
- Conduct Job Safety Analysis (JSA) and participate in toolbox talks.
- Apply Lock-Out/Tag-Out (LOTO) procedures where required.
- Maintain excellent housekeeping standards within assembly work areas.
6. Documentation & Reporting
- Complete assembly reports, checklists, and torque records.
- Record quality findings, rework activities, and corrective actions.
- Maintain accurate assembly documentation and traceability records.
- Provide regular updates on assembly progress and completion status.
7. Tool & Asset Management
- Maintain accountability for company tools and equipment.
- Conduct routine inspections of assembly tools and equipment.
- Ensure proper storage and care of company assets.
- Report damaged or defective tools promptly.
8. Continuous Improvement
- Support initiatives aimed at reducing assembly defects and rework.
- Participate in problem-solving and root cause investigations.
- Recommend improvements to assembly procedures and practices.
- Support operational excellence and productivity improvement initiatives.
9. Qualifications & Experience
- Must have a full Grade 12 Certificate
- Must possess an Advanced Certificate in Heavy Equipment Repair (HER), Mechanical Engineering, or related technical trade
- Diploma in Heavy Equipment Repair or Mechanical Engineering will be an added advantage
- Must have a minimum of 3 years' experience in heavy equipment assembly, maintenance, or repair
- Must have experience in mechanical fitting and assembly activities on heavy equipment
- Must have experience reading engineering drawings, assembly manuals, and technical procedures
- Experience on mining equipment and rigid dump trucks will be an added advantage
- Valid and unendorsed manual driver's license
