Job Purpose

To perform microbiological testing on food and water samples to ensure compliance with safety, quality, and regulatory standards.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct microbiological tests on food and water samples using standard lab techniques.
  • Verify and interpret test results against known standards and regulatory guidelines.
  • Maintain laboratory efficiency and ensure adherence to turnaround times (TAT).
  • Clean, disinfect, and maintain laboratory equipment; report calibration and service needs.
  • Ensure compliance with OHS, ISO 17025 and GLP standards.
  • Implement corrective actions for non-conforming results or delayed TATs.
  • Maintain accurate records and proficiency scores for all testing conducted.
  • Manage stock levels and consumables to support uninterrupted testing.
  • Register and track samples using Laboratory Information Management Systems (LIMS).
  • Support administrative tasks and assist in audits and inspections.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned within the scope of the role.
Job Requirements

Qualifications

  • Diploma or Degree in Microbiology, Biotechnology or Food Technology.
  • Additional certifications in ISO 17025, GLP, or SANAS-accredited microbiology courses are advantageous.

Experience

  • 1–3 years of experience in a microbiology lab, preferably in food or water testing.
  • Experience with LIMS, lab equipment maintenance, and quality assurance protocols.
  • Familiarity with SANAS or ISO-accredited laboratory environments.

Skills & Knowledge

  • Strong understanding of microbiological testing methods and foodborne pathogens.
  • Knowledge of South African food safety regulations and international standards.
  • Proficiency in lab equipment handling and data interpretation.
  • Excellent attention to detail, time management, and communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced lab environment.
