Background

First Africa Metals Limited, a startup and growing Tantalum and Tin mining operation, is seeking a suitably qualified and experienced Mine Accountant to join its Finance function.

The Role

The Mine Accountant will be responsible for ensuring the integrity of the mine’s financial records and reporting, effective cost management, budgeting and forecasting, treasury and cash management, tax and statutory compliance, and robust financial controls.

The successful candidate will provide high-quality financial information and commercial analysis to management, supporting sound operational and investment decision-making.

Key Responsibilities

The successful candidate will be responsible for:

  • Preparing monthly and annual financial statements and managing month-end and year-end close processes.
  • Managing the general ledger, reconciliations, fixed assets, inventory, and financial records.
  • Analysing mining and operating costs, including unit costs, variances, and opportunities for cost optimisation.
  • Coordinating annual budgets, forecasts, cash flow projections, and capital expenditure planning.
  • Managing cash flow, working capital, treasury controls, and payment scheduling.
  • Ensuring compliance with IFRS, Zambian tax legislation, and statutory reporting requirements, including Income Tax, VAT, PAYE, Withholding Tax, and Mineral Royalty Tax.
  • Supporting internal and external audits and maintaining effective financial controls and governance.
  • Accounting for capital projects and monitoring expenditure against approved budgets.
  • Preparing management reports and financial analysis to support operational and commercial decision-making.

Qualifications & Experience

Applicants must be a fully qualified ZICA accounting professional in good standing with the Zambia Institute of Chartered Accountants (ZICA).

A minimum of five (5) years’ progressive accounting experience.

Demonstrable experience in financial reporting, budgeting, cost accounting, and statutory compliance.

Strong knowledge of IFRS and Zambian tax and regulatory requirements.

Good commercial analysis skills using tools such as Microsoft Excel or similar.

Experience in capital project accounting, financial modelling, and commercial analysis will be an added advantage.

Experience in the mining or extractive industry will be a further added advantage.

Ideal Candidate

The successful candidate will be a technically strong and commercially minded accountant with a sound understanding of the financial and operational requirements of a mining environment.

The individual must demonstrate:

  • Ability to work effectively with operational and management teams

Location

The position may require occasional travel to operational sites and corporate offices, as well as extended working hours during month-end, year-end, and audit periods.
