  • Explosives handling:Assemble primer charges and load explosives into blast holes. Handle, store, and transport explosives and accessories safely, following all standard procedures and regulations.
  • Initiation:Connect electrical wires, detonating cords, or fuses to create a blasting circuit, and connect the series to a blasting machine for detonation.
  • Detonation:Safely detonate explosives to dislodge large quantities of rock, ore, or coal.
  • Safety and compliance:Ensure all safety measures are followed, conduct pre-blast safety checks, and confirm that all personnel and equipment are clear of the blast radius.

Other duties

  • Operate drilling equipment, such as air-track, rotary, or down-hole drills.
  • Supervise or coordinate the work of other team members.
  • Maintain a high standard of quality and efficiency in all operations.
  • Complete and submit all required safety and usage logs.

This role requires strict adherence to safety regulations and precise planning.

  • Design:Read diagrams and instructions, lay out the drill pattern, and determine the appropriate depth and diameter of blast holes.
  • Material Assessment:Conduct field tests and work with geologists to determine the type and quantity of explosives needed based on the rock characteristics.
  • Explosive Handling:Assemble primer charges using specified detonators, fuses, and cords.
  • Loading:Load explosives into the blast holes, either manually or by directing bulk explosives trucks.
  • Circuit Assembly:Connect electrical wires, detonating cords, or fuses into a series and link them to the blasting machine.
  • Detonation and Inspection:Press the handle or button to detonate the charges, and afterwards, inspect the site to ensure all explosives have detonated and to check for hazards like misfires or loose hanging rock.
  • Safety and Compliance:Ensure the handling, storage, and transport of explosives and accessories are in strict accordance with federal, provincial, and company regulations. Establish and maintain exclusion zones around blast areas.
  • Record Keeping:Maintain accurate records of explosive inventories, blast patterns, times, weather, and other relevant information.

  • Technical knowledge:In-depth knowledge of different types of explosives, detonators, and blasting techniques.
  • Problem-solving skills:The ability to deal with unforeseen obstacles and hazards, such as misfires or changing ground conditions.
  • Licensing:Must possess and maintain a valid blaster's license or certification as required by local regulations (e.g., a Blasting Certificate for certain regions).
  • Experience:The ideal candidate should possess a minimum of 5 years work experience and or will require prior experience, gained as a blaster helper or through an apprenticeship, and formal education such as a diploma or degree in mining/explosive engineering may be considered as an entry point.
