The Mobile Crane Operator:
• Will be required to safely operate all mobile cranes from the 170 to 300 tons according to the prescribed qualification class standards while ensuring the safety of self, equipment and others.
• Must ensure the mobile cranes comply to safety regulations and that defects are reported to the Supervisor so that such defects are timeously attended to
• Must ensure compliance to statutory regulations and safety standards.
• Will be responsible for the safe operation of the 170 tons and above mobile cranes supporting maintenance personnel including riggers in order to maintain operational integrity of the plant & equipment in the quest to achieve production targets.
• Will report directly to the rigger supervisor and shall be responsible for providing the highest quality services and that all services provided are performed within a safe and timely manner.

Specific Job Key Responsibilities
The holder of this position will be required to adhere to all relevant requirements, policies, procedures and legal regulations pertaining to health, safety, environment and quality, as well as finance, human resources, and any other regulations as required by the company and relevant to the level of the role and responsibilities of the function. Compliance to JSA’s, Work Procedure’s, SWPs, etc. Ensure compliance with Safety and Environmental Management systems, policies and procedures along with ensuring that all risks have been identified, managed or mitigated.
• Must demonstrate commitment to workplace safety and the safety of fellow workers
• Must ensure legislative Compliance, operate within and observe all relevant and applicable laws of the Country i.e. valid Pneumoconiosis certificate, EIZ, Permits etc.
• Must ensure the Crane is within the valid Statutory / Legislative Regulation test dates
• Must ensure legislative compliance with Safety and Environmental management system, policies and procedures along with ensuring that all risks are identified, managed and a safe working environment maintained
• Must Know the basic crane components for better reporting of faults
• Must be knowledgeable of hoist rope types, characteristics and carryout thorough inspections and identify defects on wire ropes
• Must carry out daily pre-use inspections on mobile crane to identify defects that can compromise the safe operation of the crane
• Must check reeving system of the hoist rope to ensure safe lifting of the various loads
• Must be able to inspect lifting equipment and identify defects to ensure no defective slings or equipment is attached to the crane hook for performing lifting tasks
• Must be able to interpret the Load chart and compare information on the Load Moment indicator (LMI) system with the information on the manual load chart to ensure the LMI system is in accordance with the load chart.
• Must not override any crane trip protection functionality under normal operation
• Must Identify work areas and ensure the best positioning of mobile crane to perform lifting tasks and assess and determine site safety for crane stability (ground conditions)
• Shall be responsible for safe set-up, operation and good driving skills of mobile crane within this qualification class (e.g. 170 tons up to 300 tons)
• Must be accurate, methodical and practical when performing lifting tasks
• Must be able to maintain the crane cleanness at all times
• Shall ensure basic maintenance on crane like greasing of pins; boom and under carriage is done
• Shall ensure crane maintenance schedule is observed and checklists are correctly filled in and records retained.
• Must be able to assess environmental and weather conditions to ensure crane safety and safe working conditions i.e. Electrical power lines, wind, rain and visibility
• Must have knowledge of emergence procedures to apply during threatening moments like crane tipping off or out rigger sinking in soft ground
• Understand and demonstrate the correct interpretation of communication signals from the crane chaser or Rigger
• Must be a self-starter and able to work with less supervision (autonomously) and as part of the team
• Must embrace the FQM Way culture in the workplace – “Bolder, Smarter, Driven, Together.”
• Must enforce good housekeeping practices by ensuring cleaning up before, during and after every task and not leaving any hazards within the workplace
• Shall carry out other duties as assigned by the Supervisor related to the above work

EXPERIENCE REQUIRED IN THIS ROLE
• Minimum Five years’ experience in a Mining environment with proven knowledge and experience in heavy mining units, mobile cranes and lifting equipment
• Trained and certified to operate mobile cranes from 13 Ton to 400 Ton

QUALIFICATIONS
• Minimum of a Grade 12 Certificate
• Mobile Crane Operator Certificate obtained from an accredited institution
• Valid Heavy Vehicle Driver’s License / Permit
• A member of the Engineering Institution and Engineers Registration Board (ERB) of the country – Optional
• Tertiary Education qualification in Rigging will be an advantage
