Background

The Government of the Republic of Zambia is accessing funding from the Global Environment Facility (GEF) in the 8th replenishment cycle in collaboration with WWF US as a GEF Agency and International Crane Foundation (ICF) as the implementing partner for the two projects “Kafue Flats Climate Resilience and Adaptation Project (KaF-Adapt)” and the “Kafue Flats Wildlife, Habitat, Health and Livelihoods Project (KaF-Wild)” under the Ministry of Green Economy and Environment (MGEE) and the Ministry of Tourism, through its Department of National Parks and Wildlife (DNPW). The five-year project is aimed at strengthening climate resilience, biodiversity conservation, and sustainable livelihoods in the Kafue Flats Ecosystem.

Applications are invited from suitably qualified candidates for the following vacant position under the Global Environment Facility (GEF) 8 Project:

Project Accountant

Responsibilities

  • Prepare, administer, and monitor the budgets for both projects, ensuring financial information is accurate and up to date.
  • Monitor project expenditure against approved budgets and work plans, ensuring correct coding and compliance with GEF and WWF financial requirements.
  • Prepare and submit timely and accurate financial reports for both projects in accordance with donor reporting requirements.
  • Support the selection and financial due diligence of sub-grantees, including conducting risk assessments and developing mitigation plans.
  • Administer and monitor sub-grantee and consultant agreements, ensuring compliance with agreement terms and organizational policies.
  • Review and analyse financial reports submitted by sub-grantees and provide technical support to address any financial reporting issues.
  • Support annual supervision missions, financial audits, and project evaluations by providing the required financial information and documentation.
  • Maintain complete financial and administrative records for both projects, including agreements and supporting documentation.
  • Monitor compliance with project reporting requirements and ensure adherence to project timelines and donor deadlines.
  • Provide financial and administrative support to the Project Manager and coordinate with the Project Steering Committee, WWF GEF Agency, project partners, and other stakeholders on project financial matters.

Qualifications and Requirements

Applicants should possess:

  • A bachelor’s degree in accounting, Business Administration, Commerce, Economics, or a related field.
  • A professional accounting qualification will be an added advantage.
  • A minimum of five (5) years' experience in project administration and financial management.
  • Demonstrated experience in office administration and providing logistical support for project implementation and stakeholder events.
  • Experience working on complex multi-stakeholder projects funded by the GEF, other donors, or development organisations will be an added advantage.
  • Experience supporting annual financial audits and other finance-related processes will be an added advantage.
  • Excellent time management, organisational, and interpersonal skills with strong attention to detail.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and accounting software packages.
  • Strong report writing and communication skills.
  • Female candidates are strongly encouraged to apply.
