Job Purpose:

To perform the inspection, maintenance, troubleshooting, repair, overhaul, testing, and commissioning of hydraulic rock breakers and associated hydraulic systems, ensuring maximum equipment reliability, availability, and safe operation in accordance with Normet specifications and client requirements.

Professional Profile

A highly skilled and safety-conscious Rock Breaker Mechanic with proven experience in maintaining hydraulic rock breakers and associated hydraulic systems in underground or surface mining operations. Competent in diagnosing mechanical and hydraulic faults, carrying out preventative and corrective maintenance, rebuilding hydraulic components, and ensuring equipment operates at optimum performance.

Possesses excellent knowledge of hydraulic circuits, pumps, cylinders, control valves, accumulators, hoses, seals, and lubrication systems. Able to interpret hydraulic schematics, engineering drawings, and Normet service manuals while maintaining strict compliance with safety, quality, and environmental standards.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Craft Certificate or Trade Certificate in Mechanical Fitting, Heavy Equipment Repair, or Mechanical Engineering.
  • Trade Test Certificate as a Mechanical Fitter or Heavy Equipment Mechanic.
  • Grade 12 School Certificate.
  • Valid driver’s licence (advantageous).
  • First Aid Certificate (advantageous).
  • Working at Heights and Confined Space training (advantageous).

Minimum Experience

  • Minimum of 3–5 years’ experience maintaining hydraulic rock breakers or heavy hydraulic mining equipment.
  • Experience working in underground or surface mining environments.
  • Proven experience troubleshooting and repairing hydraulic systems.
  • Experience with preventative maintenance programmes and breakdown response.
  • Experience using hydraulic testing equipment and precision measuring tools.

Technical Skills

  • Maintenance and overhaul of hydraulic rock breakers.
  • Hydraulic fault diagnosis and repair.
  • Replacement of wear parts, seal kits, hoses, pins, bushes, and tool retainers.
  • Charging and testing hydraulic accumulators.
  • Reading hydraulic schematics and engineering drawings.
  • Inspection and servicing of hydraulic pumps, cylinders, valves, and control systems.
  • Safe use of workshop tools, lifting equipment, and diagnostic instruments.
  • Accurate completion of maintenance reports and service documentation.
