Job Purpose

To supervise all rock breaker maintenance and repair activities on site, ensuring equipment reliability, safe work execution, and high-quality service delivery in accordance with contractual obligations, Normet standards, and client requirements. The role is responsible for leading maintenance personnel, coordinating daily activities, and ensuring maximum equipment availability while maintaining the highest safety standards.

Key Responsibilities

Operational Management

  • Supervise the daily maintenance, repair, and inspection of hydraulic rock breakers and associated hydraulic systems.
  • Plan and allocate work to fitters and technicians to achieve maintenance targets.
  • Ensure all scheduled preventative maintenance is completed on time.
  • Coordinate breakdown response activities to minimise equipment downtime.
  • Monitor equipment performance and identify recurring failures for corrective action.
  • Ensure maintenance activities comply with Normet specifications and client procedures.

Team Leadership

  • Lead, coach, and mentor maintenance personnel.
  • Conduct daily toolbox talks and shift planning meetings.
  • Monitor employee performance and provide ongoing technical guidance.
  • Identify training requirements and support competency development.
  • Promote teamwork and maintain discipline within the maintenance team.

Health, Safety and Environment

  • Promote a strong safety culture and ensure compliance with all mine safety regulations.
  • Ensure all work is carried out under approved risk assessments and permits.
  • Conduct workplace inspections and safety observations.
  • Investigate incidents and implement corrective actions.
  • Ensure proper housekeeping in workshops and work areas.

Client Relationship Management

  • Maintain professional working relationships with client representatives.
  • Attend operational meetings with the client when required.
  • Provide technical recommendations to improve equipment reliability.
  • Ensure contractual service levels are consistently achieved.

Planning and Reporting

  • Prepare daily, weekly, and monthly maintenance reports.
  • Monitor maintenance KPIs including equipment availability, breakdown frequency, MTTR, and MTBF.
  • Maintain accurate maintenance records and service documentation.
  • Coordinate spare parts requirements with the warehouse and procurement teams.
  • Assist in forecasting labour, tooling, and consumable requirements.

Quality Assurance

  • Ensure repairs meet Normet quality standards.
  • Verify completed work before equipment is returned to service.
  • Monitor compliance with maintenance procedures and work instructions.
  • Support continuous improvement initiatives to enhance maintenance efficiency.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Craft Certificate or Diploma in Mechanical Engineering or Mechanical Fitting.
  • Trade Test Certificate (Mechanical Fitter).
  • Valid First Aid Certificate (advantageous).
  • Valid driver’s licence.

Experience

  • Minimum of 5 years’ experience maintaining hydraulic rock breakers or similar mining equipment.
  • At least 2 years in a supervisory role within underground mining or heavy equipment maintenance.
  • Experience with hydraulic systems, pumps, cylinders, valves, accumulators, and hydraulic diagnostics.
  • Experience working on Normet or mining contractor maintenance projects.

Knowledge and Skills

  • Strong understanding of hydraulic systems and rock breaker technology.
  • Ability to interpret hydraulic schematics and technical drawings.
  • Good planning and organisational skills.
  • Strong leadership and people management skills.
  • Excellent fault-finding and problem-solving abilities.
  • Computer literacy, including Microsoft Office and maintenance management systems.
  • Strong communication and report-writing skills.
