SAFETY HEALTH AND ENVIRONMENTAL OFFICER

Job Purpose

To provide strategic and operational leadership in the planning, implementation, and monitoring of Safety, Health, and Environmental (SHE) programs across the company. The role ensures full compliance with statutory requirements, promotes a proactive safety culture, and supports the integration of SHE management systems into all business operations and projects.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead the implementation and continuous improvement of SHE policies, procedures, and management systems in line with legal, regulatory, and organizational standards.
  • Drive compliance with environmental, health, and safety legislation across all operational and project activities.
  • Monitor, evaluate, and report on SHE performance, ensuring timely identification and mitigation of risks.
  • Oversee the management of environmental and safety risks associated with project execution and operational processes.
  • Ensure contractors and service providers adhere to SHE standards, contractual obligations, and regulatory requirements.
  • Conduct comprehensive risk assessments, inspections, and audits; provide actionable recommendations and track closure of identified gaps.
  • Provide expert advisory support to management and supervisors on SHE-related matters, ensuring informed decision-making.
  • Partner with Human Resources to identify SHE competency gaps and coordinate targeted training, awareness campaigns, and capacity-building initiatives.
  • Promote high standards of workplace housekeeping and enforce compliance with established safety protocols.
  • Ensure the correct selection, provision, and consistent use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) in line with hazard identification and risk assessments.
  • Champion a strong safety culture by driving behavioural change initiatives and continuous improvement programs.
  • Investigate incidents, accidents, and near misses; recommend preventive and corrective measures to minimize recurrence.
  • Prepare and submit SHE reports in line with organizational and regulatory requirements.
  • Perform any other duties as assigned in support of SHE objectives.

Minimum Qualifications and Experience

  • Grade 12 Certificate
  • Bachelor’s degree in environmental science, Environmental Engineering.
  • Minimum of three (3) years’ relevant experience in a similar role, preferably within operations or project-based environments.
