JOB PURPOSE / DESCRIPTION
This role is pivotal in ensuring the successful integration of renewable energy projects such as Solar PV, Wind, Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) and hybrid systems into Zambia’s national power grid by providing engineering expertise in grid integration studies by leading in technical assessments, conduction of system modelling, ensuring grid code compliance and support the interconnection processes involving stakeholder, Independent Power Producers (IPPs) and grid operators.
QUALIFICATIONS
Grade 12 School Certificate Vocational and Professional Qualifications Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical/Electronic Engineering (Power Systems focus preferred). Master’s degree in Power Systems, Renewable Energy or related field would be an added advantage
EXPERIENCE AND REQUIREMENT
Minimum 5 years’ experience in Power System Planning or Grid Integration of renewable energy
JOB ACCOUNTABILITIES
- Conduct detailed grid integration studies for renewable energy projects, including:
- Load flow analysis
- Short-circuit and switching (energization) studies
- Reactive power capability assessments
- Rapid voltage changes and voltage ride-through compliance studies
- Transient stability analysis
- Harmonic analysis and mitigation studies
- Use advanced power system analysis tools such as DigSILENT PowerFactory, PSS®E or ETAP for modelling and simulation tasks
- Review and validate grid integration studies submitted by IPPs, including:
- Technical feasibility assessments
- Grid Code compliance verification
- Recommendations for system upgrades or mitigation measures
- Prepare and submit comprehensive technical reports, connection impact assessments and interconnection approval documentation in accordance with regulatory and utility standards
- Liase with internal planning teams, utilities, IPPs and regional system operators to facilitate renewable project interconnection and compliance processes
- Support the development and refinement of ZESCO’s renewable energy integration strategies and grid code guidelines
- Collaborate with project developers, EPC teams and consultants to optimize renewable energy plant design for grid stability and compliance
- Stay updated on evolving grid codes, standards and market rules affecting renewable energy integration at both national and regional levels
- Support the development and refinement of ZESCO’s renewable energy integration strategies and grid code guidelines
- Prepare feasibility studies for renewable energy projects
- Any other duties lawfully assigned by the Supervisor
Required Skills
- Proven experience with simulation software (DigSILENT, PSS®E, ETAP)
- Knowledge of Zambian Grid Code and Regional Grid Codes (e.g. SAPP) and renewable interconnection standards
- Strong analytical, technical reporting and communication skills. Ability to read engineering drawings
- Skilled in troubleshooting and root cause analysis
- Team-oriented with good communication skills
