Location: UP Zambia Office, Lusaka

Duration:                    6 months

Under the supervision of mental health professionals in the Social Support team, the intern will provide psychological services to children and youth in conflict or contact with the law and those at risk of being in conflict with the law. This position offers hands-on experience in conducting assessments, providing therapy, and participating in multidisciplinary case planning, with a strong emphasis on trauma-informed and culturally competent care.

Duties

  • Conduct psychological assessments (e.g., cognitive, behavioural, emotional) and assist in report writing under supervision.
  • Provide individual and group therapy sessions for children in correctional facilities and children at risk of being in conflict with the law in communities.
  • Participate in case conferences and treatment planning with multidisciplinary teams (e.g., staff attorneys, Legal officers, social workers, psychosocial counsellors and education officers).
  • Participate in workshops and make presentations when assigned.
  • Maintain accurate client documentation and case notes in accordance with organisational policies and ethical standards.
  • Support crisis intervention and de-escalation efforts when needed.
  • Learn and apply evidence-based practices appropriate for children and youth with histories. of trauma, substance use, and/or behavioural disorders.
  • Attend training sessions and team meetings regularly.

Key Requirements & Attributes

  • Degree in Psychology (being currently enrolled in a graduate program is a plus).
  • Completion of foundational coursework in assessment, psychopathology, and clinical interventions.
  • Prior experience with adolescents or in a correctional/clinical setting is a plus.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, empathy, and the ability to build rapport with diverse populations.
  • Ability to handle sensitive information with confidentiality and professionalism.
  • Commitment to restorative justice, equity, and trauma-informed care.
  • Commitment to upholding legal, ethical, and professional standards of psychological practice.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, empathy, and the ability to build rapport with diverse populations.
