Reporting to the Optimisation Manager, the Superintendent – Operational Efficiency owns the drive to improve business and operational efficiency across the site. The focus is on the practical, day-to-day performance of the operation: loading efficiency, truck and equipment queuing, shovel/loader hang time, cycle times, and utilization. This is a hands-on, field-based role that works across departments (Operations, Maintenance, Dispatch, Processing, and Finance) to identify where value is being lost and to lead reduction programs that convert those findings into measurable productivity gains.

Responsibilities or duties

Your duties & Responsibilities will include but are not limited to the following: –

  • Lead site-wide efficiency and productivity improvement programs targeting loading efficiency, truck/equipment queuing, hang time, cycle times, and fleet utilization.
  • Work with the Dispatch function, to support real-time decision-making support maximum equipment utilization and minimum delay.
  • Lead and develop the Analytics team, directing the collection and interpretation of operational, GPS/GNSS, and fleet-management data to performance issues and opportunities.
  • Use geospatial data (GPS fleet tracking, haul road layouts, cycle/route data, heat maps) to identify bottlenecks, congestion points, and inefficient traffic patterns across the site.
  • Design, launch, and track structured reduction programs (e.g., queue-time reduction, hang-time reduction, delay/downtime reduction) with clear targets, owners, and timelines.
  • Work cross-departmentally with Operations, Maintenance, Processing, and Finance to ensure improvement initiatives are practical, adopted, and sustained in the field.
  • Track key operational KPIs (utilization, availability, cycle time, queue time, hang time, productivity per unit) and report performance against targets to site leadership.
  • Translate efficiency gains into quantified business value — cost savings, throughput gains, or productivity improvement — and ensure that value is realized and sustained, not just identified.
  • Conduct root-cause analysis on recurring operational losses and lead corrective action with the relevant department heads.
  • Build standard reporting, dashboards, and visual management tools that give operational and site leadership real-time visibility into efficiency performance.
  • Hold or manage operating budgets and cost/efficiency targets on behalf of the site, with the authority to sign off on operational spend within delegated limits while covering for site leadership.
  • Contribute to site technology and data governance — across analytics, dispatch, and fleet-management systems are built on reliable, well-governed data frameworks.

Qualifications or requirements

To be considered for the position, the applicant must have the following:

  • Grade twelve (12) School Certificate
  • Minimum Degree in Mining Engineering or related Engineering qualification
  • Direct experience with mine dispatch systems and fleet management platforms (e.g., Hexagon, Wenco, or equivalent).
  • Strong working knowledge of loading and haulage operations — loading efficiency, shovel/loader hang time, truck queuing and cycle times, and the practical drivers behind each.
  • Very strong data analysis skills, with heavy, hands-on use of geospatial/GPS data (GIS platforms, fleet-tracking data, heat maps, route and cycle-time analysis) to diagnose operational issues.
  • Proven people-management experience, ideally working with operational and analytics teams.
  • Strong stakeholder management skills — able to work credibly with operations, maintenance, and finance leaders, and to drive adoption of change at the field level.
  • Eligible to hold statutory / legally appointed mine positions under local mining regulations, and willing to carry such appointments when covering for senior site leadership.
  • Familiarity with GIS or spatial-analysis tools (e.g., ArcGIS, or site fleet-management platforms with built-in spatial visualization).
  • Member of the Engineering Institute of Zambia
  • Must have a valid Driver’s licence

Experience needed

  • Minimum ten (10) years of experience in mining or heavy industrial operations, with a strong, practical, hands-on operational background.
  • Demonstrated experience leading cross-departmental efficiency, productivity, or continuous-improvement programs, with measurable, realized business results.

What We Can Offer You:

  • A comprehensive compensation package including bonuses and site-specific benefits
  • The ability to make a difference and lasting impact
  • Work in a dynamic, collaborative, progressive, and high-performing team
  • Opportunities to grow and learn with industry colleagues
  • Access to a variety of career opportunities across the organization
