About Wuchi Wami
Wuchi Wami Limited is a Zambian honey company established in 2018. It sources sustainably harvested honey from the Miombo forests of North-Western Province through a network of more than 3,600 community beekeepers. Its honey is sold through leading Zambian retailers and exported to five countries. Wuchi Wami trains beekeepers, provides top-bar hives and connects farmers to a market for their honey.
Our Growth
Wuchi Wami is expanding its beekeeper network across North-Western Province and plans to recruit and train an additional 3,000 farmers in sustainable beekeeping, legume farming and agribusiness, with a strong focus on young women and youth. Farmers receive hives and protective equipment, are organised into cooperatives, and are linked to markets and financial services through a digital traceability platform.
To support these operations, Wuchi Wami is seeking a reliable, safety-conscious driver to operate its Mercedes-Benz Unimog 4x4 (chassis 124579) on rural routes and challenging terrain.
Role Purpose
The Unimog Off-Road Vehicle Driver is responsible for the safe, reliable and efficient operation of the assigned vehicle, including routine inspections, basic preventative maintenance, and transport and field-support assignments. The postholder will help ensure that personnel, materials and equipment are transported safely and on schedule, including on unpaved roads and difficult terrain.
Key Responsibilities
Safe Driving and Vehicle Operation
- Operate the Mercedes-Benz Unimog 4x4 safely and competently on rural roads, unpaved routes and challenging terrain.
- Use the vehicle’s off-road features and controls appropriately, in line with training, manufacturer guidance and operating procedures.
- Complete assigned transport and field-support tasks in accordance with approved work plans, instructions and work orders.
- Ensure loads, materials and equipment are properly secured before travel and handled safely during loading and unloading.
Vehicle Inspections and Routine Maintenance
- Complete and document pre-trip, en-route and post-trip vehicle inspections.
- Monitor key vehicle indicators, including oil pressure, coolant temperature and fluid levels, and report unusual noises, warning signs or defects promptly.
- Carry out routine checks and basic maintenance within the driver’s competence and authorisation, and identify when servicing or repairs are required.
- Report mechanical faults and coordinate maintenance through the appropriate supervisor or service provider. Do not undertake repairs beyond your competence or authorisation.
Operational and Field Support
- Transport personnel, materials, equipment and other approved loads to support Wuchi Wami’s operational and field activities.
- Follow trip plans, delivery instructions and supervisor guidance, and communicate delays or route-related challenges promptly.
- Support other authorised vehicle-related tasks where required and where appropriate instruction and training have been provided.
Safety and Compliance
- Comply with road traffic legislation, company driving policies, site safety procedures and applicable vehicle-load requirements.
- Drive defensively and adapt driving practices to weather, road, terrain and vehicle-load conditions.
- Report incidents, near misses, vehicle damage and safety hazards to the supervisor without delay.
- Maintain a professional and respectful manner when interacting with colleagues, farmers, community members and other stakeholders.
Records and Reporting
- Maintain accurate records of mileage, fuel consumption, vehicle use, inspections, maintenance and defects.
- Complete trip sheets and work reports accurately and submit them within agreed timelines.
- Use a smartphone or tablet for digital records and data collection where required.
Required Qualifications and Experience
- Hold a valid heavy-vehicle driving licence, such as Class C1, C or CE, or an equivalent commercial licence recognised in Zambia and appropriate for the assigned vehicle.
- A minimum of 5 years of relevant professional driving experience, preferably involving heavy vehicles, 4x4 vehicles or operations in remote rural areas.
- Have practical knowledge of basic diesel-engine operation and the ability to recognise common mechanical faults and carry out simple checks or emergency measures within the limits of training and authorisation.
- Demonstrate a strong commitment to road safety, vehicle care, punctuality and responsible driving.
- Have a satisfactory driving record, with no serious or relevant traffic offences that would make you unsuitable for the role.
- Be physically able to undertake the driving and outdoor duties associated with the position, with reasonable accommodation where applicable.
- Be fluent in English and at least one relevant local language, such as Lunda, Kaonde/Kikaonde or Luvale.
- Be comfortable using a smartphone or tablet for work-related records and data collection.
- Be resident in Mwinilunga or willing to relocate to the duty station.
Desirable Experience
- Previous experience operating a Mercedes-Benz Unimog or a similar heavy-duty, off-road or multi-purpose vehicle.
- Experience transporting equipment or supplies in rural areas and working with field teams or community-based programmes.
- Familiarity with off-road vehicle features and attachments, where relevant to the duties assigned.
Personal Attributes
- Reliable, safety-conscious, honest and accountable.
- Able to work independently with limited supervision and follow instructions accurately.
- Respectful and patient when engaging with young people, first-time farmers, women farmers and diverse rural communities.
