Role Description

The Biomedical Engineer will ensure that medical equipment and systems used in patient care are operational, safe, and properly configured and used to meet our healthcare standards. They will need to continually educate and train equipment users so that the equipment is used and maintained effectively.

They will be expected to prepare and execute on a preventive maintenance schedule, which includes setting the appropriate stock holding levels for essential spares, for all equipment to limit medical equipment being non-operational or dangerous to patient care. They will collaborate with manufacturers and suppliers to guarantee that their knowledge is up to date, troubleshoot and resolve problems expediently.

Educational Requirements

  • Grade 12 Certificate
  • A minimum of a Diploma in biomedical engineering or electronics and instrumentation or its equivalent.
  • Diagnostic skills in hospital instruments and equipment
  • IT Skills.

Key Accountabilities

Reporting into the Biomedical and Clinic Manager, this role will be responsible for:

  • Ensure the safety of equipment used for diagnosis, treatment and monitoring.
  • To ensure medical equipment functions effectively and safely.
  • To ensure medical equipment in the clinical environment is available and appropriate to the needs of the clinical service.
  • To ensure medical equipment and its management represents value for patient benefit
  • Investigate medical equipment failures and provide advice about the purchase and installation of new equipment.
  • Develop and evaluate quantitative models of biological processes and systems

Customer Service

  • Exhibits professional conduct at all times towards patients/clients and staff members.
  • Does not engage in personal confrontation with patients but seeks better ways of resolving grievances by engaging the right people to sort out any grievances.
  • Does not engage in any social conduct that brings the name of the company to disrepute.
  • Undergone in-house training on good customer service
  • No complaints are reported against the employee relating to unprofessional behaviour (i:e bullying patients, rude, yelling etc).

Professional

  • Able to provide training in use of medical equipment
  • Proficiency in English
  • Customer focused and have strong interpersonal and problem solving skills

  • No consumption of alcohol is allowed whilst on duty. Intake of alcohol while off duty is allowed but inebriation is forbidden in public.

  • Ensure reports are produced from accurate and reliable information with a clear audit trail.
  • Produces work of a standard that is acceptable to the Biomedical Engineering Manager.
