Consultant: Dental Surgeon
DENTAL SURGERY CONSULTANT
As a Consultant in Dental Surgery, you will be responsible for providing specialist oral healthcare services, clinical leadership, and academic support within the University’s health services and affiliated teaching hospital. The role involves the diagnosis, treatment, and management of complex oral and maxillofacial conditions, while contributing to teaching, research, and clinical governance in line with the University’s academic and healthcare mission.
Key Responsibilities
Clinical Responsibilities
- Provide specialist consultation, diagnosis, treatment, and management of patients with complex dental, oral, and maxillofacial conditions.
- Perform advanced dental and minor oral surgical procedures within the scope of specialist practice.
- Conduct specialist outpatient clinics, inpatient consultations, and ward rounds for patients requiring dental and oral healthcare services.
- Participate in emergency dental and on-call services as scheduled.
- Supervise the clinical work of Dental Registrars, Dental Officers, Intern Dentists, Dental Therapists, Dental Technologists, Dental Assistants, and other oral healthcare professionals.
- Develop and implement evidence-based clinical protocols and ensure compliance with professional standards and quality assurance requirements.
- Maintain accurate and timely patient records in accordance with regulatory and institutional requirements.
- Promote patient safety, infection prevention and control, radiation safety, and ethical clinical practice.
- Collaborate with other medical and surgical specialties in the multidisciplinary management of patients.
Teaching and Academic Responsibilities
- Deliver lectures, tutorials, practical sessions, simulation training, and clinical teaching to undergraduate dental students and other allied health students.
- Supervise postgraduate trainees in Dental Surgery and related specialty training programmes.
- Participate in curriculum development, academic planning, accreditation activities, and continuous review of dental education programmes.
- Contribute to student assessments, including written examinations, Objective Structured Clinical Examinations (OSCEs), clinical case presentations, logbook assessments, and dissertation supervision.
- Mentor undergraduate and postgraduate students, interns, and junior academic staff in clinical and academic development.
Research and Scholarly Activity
- Initiate and participate in clinical, epidemiological, and operational research in oral health and dental sciences.
- Supervise undergraduate and postgraduate student research projects and dissertations.
- Publish research findings in peer-reviewed journals and present scholarly work at local and international scientific conferences.
- Contribute to grant applications, interdisciplinary research, and collaborative academic initiatives that advance oral health and dental education.
Qualifications and Experience
- Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS) or Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) or an equivalent recognized dental qualification.
- Master of Dental Surgery (MDS) or an equivalent recognized specialist qualification in Dental Surgery or a relevant dental specialty.
- Full registration with the Health Professions Council and possession of a valid practising licence.
- Fellowship qualification from a recognized professional college will be an added advantage.
- At least 3 to 5 years post-specialization clinical experience in Dental Surgery or a relevant specialty.
- Demonstrated teaching experience at undergraduate and postgraduate levels.
- Evidence of research output, peer-reviewed publications, and conference presentations will be an added advantage.
- Strong clinical leadership, communication, interpersonal, and multidisciplinary teamwork skills.
