About the Role
We are seeking a proactive Driver Trainer to join our team. The Driver Trainer will be responsible for developing, coordinating, and delivering structured driver training programs aimed at improving driver competence, safety performance, regulatory compliance, fuel efficiency, and overall operational effectiveness. The role ensures that all drivers consistently meet company standards, legal requirements, and industry best practices within road transport operations.
Key Responsibilities
- Conduct induction training for newly recruited drivers.
- Design, implement, and deliver driver training and refresher programs.
- Train drivers in defensive driving, hazard awareness, and accident prevention techniques.
- Carry out practical driving assessments and competency evaluations.
- Provide coaching and mentoring for drivers requiring performance improvement.
- Ensure drivers fully understand company policies, procedures, and operational standards.
- Promote a strong safety culture across all transport operations.
- Deliver training on road traffic regulations and statutory compliance requirements.
- Conduct toolbox talks and safety awareness sessions.
- Train drivers on fatigue management, journey planning, and emergency response procedures.
- Monitor adherence to speed limits, driving hours, and vehicle operating standards.
- Conduct pre-employment driver assessments and road tests.
- Evaluate driver performance using reports, telematics data, and incident records.
- Identify training needs and recommend corrective actions.
- Maintain accurate driver competency records and training matrices.
- Participate in accident and incident investigations.
- Identify root causes linked to driver behavior and competence.
- Develop and implement corrective training programs following incidents or violations.
- Train drivers on fuel-efficient driving techniques and best practices.
- Promote proper vehicle handling and preventive maintenance awareness.
- Ensure compliance with daily vehicle inspection and defect reporting procedures.
- Maintain accurate training records and attendance registers.
- Prepare monthly training, compliance, and performance reports.
- Update training materials, manuals, and guidelines as required.
Qualifications & Experience
- Grade 12 Certificate.
- Diploma or Certificate in Transport & Logistics, Road Transport Management, Occupational Health & Safety, or a related field.
- Minimum 5 years’ experience as a professional heavy-duty driver.
- At least 2 years’ experience in driver training, coaching, or fleet operations.
- Experience in long-haul, tanker, or hazardous goods transport will be an added advantage.
Licenses & Certifications
- Valid Professional Driver’s License (appropriate class).
- Defensive Driving Certificate.
- Dangerous Goods Certification (where applicable).
- Training of Trainers (TOT) Certificate is an added advantage.
- Valid medical fitness certificate.
Key Competencies
- Excellent driving and vehicle handling skills.
- Strong knowledge of road transport laws and compliance requirements.
- Strong communication, facilitation, and presentation skills.
- Coaching and mentoring capability.
- Incident investigation and problem-solving ability.
- Strong report writing and record-keeping skills.

Working Conditions
- Frequent travel to operational sites and client locations.
- Field-based driver assessments and coaching duties.
