A. POSITION DESCRIPTION.
Position: Driver - WASH Project Phase Three
Job Type: Full Time
Location: The Salvation Army Territorial Headquarters, Lusaka, Zambia
Department: Programme Department - WASH Project Phase Three
Reports to: Project Manager
Coordinates with: Project Manager, WASH Project Team, Programme Department and authorized staff.
B. JOB PURPOSE.
The function of the Driver position is to provide safe, reliable and efficient transport services for the WASH Project Phase Three. The Driver will transport staff, partners, documents and project materials for field visits, meetings, workshops, conferences, airport runs and other approved project activities. The Driver will maintain the assigned vehicle in a clean, roadworthy and safe condition; complete log sheets and delivery records accurately; observe all applicable traffic laws and Salvation Army Zambia Territory policies; and report any damage, faults, statutory renewals or other vehicle-related issues to the supervisor. The Driver will also support project activities by handling cargo responsibly and performing related duties as assigned by the Project Manager.
C. GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES.
Transport project staff, partners and approved passengers safely and responsibly.
Maintain assigned vehicles in clean, safe and roadworthy condition.
Complete vehicle log sheets, dispatch records, delivery sheets and other transport documentation.
Support delivery and pickup of project items, documents and materials.
Handle, load, unload and secure cargo responsibly to avoid damage.
Observe applicable traffic laws, safety requirements and Salvation Army Zambia Territory policies.
Support project field visits, meetings, workshops, conferences and other approved activities.
Report vehicle faults, damage, statutory renewals and other operational issues promptly.
D. SPECIFIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES.
Accurately complete and submit all necessary paperwork, including log sheets, dispatch sheets and delivery sheets.
Deliver and pick up items and documentation, ensuring accurate capture of the item or document, the person who requested transportation, the recipient and all required signatures.
Keep assigned vehicles free from damage, in acceptable condition and consistently clean. Ensure the vehicle is in proper and safe condition before use and report any damage or mechanical faults.
Manage products and merchandise responsibly while loading, unloading or transporting items, ensuring that cargo is properly secured to avoid damage.
Accept responsibility for the proper use and maintenance of keys and vehicle fittings, including radios, air conditioners and heaters, and ensure keys are properly checked in and out.
Work extra hours or overtime as needed according to the project workload.
Operate vehicles and equipment safely and responsibly as assigned.
Respect and maintain the relationship of trust required to obtain a high level of security access to offices, homes and property of the organization’s personnel without supervision.
Be willing and able to perform tasks without direct supervision that may require physical labour and possibly the use of hand tools, both indoors and outdoors in unfavourable weather.
Transport members of staff and other individuals as directed, in a safe and responsible manner, including for field visits, meetings, workshops, conferences and airport runs.
Operate the vehicle in accordance with applicable Salvation Army Zambia Territory policies, observe all traffic laws, ordinances and regulations, and use safe driving practices at all times.
Assume responsibility for any fines or traffic violations associated with the use of the vehicle.
Monitor the validity of statutory vehicle roadworthiness requirements such as road tax, fitness and insurance, and report renewals when due.
Perform any other duties as assigned by the supervisor.
E. KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS.
Proven experience as a Driver.
A valid driver's licence.
A clean driving record.
Familiarity with GPS devices.
Knowledge of area roads and neighbourhoods.
Ability to lift heavy packages and luggage.
Availability to occasionally work weekend and night shifts.
A polite and professional disposition.
Ability to remain calm in stressful driving situations, including rush hour.
A High School Certificate.
Strong communication skills to interact with clients, staff and partners.
Experience in driving for development, humanitarian, NGO or community-based projects will be an added advantage.
