Good Nature is a legume seed company founded to profitably move farmers out of poverty andintothemiddle class. We believe that the future of agriculture in Africa is disaggregated, with smallholders asthe most powerful producers for local, regional, and global markets. We have designed our systems tobe personal yet scalable. We have overseen consistent annual growth in our supply chain (currentlyat 4,720 small-scale seed producers), production, grower income (now 300% of baseline) and companyrevenue, as our growers learn and become more efficient. We are now at a point of inflection: expanding beyond Zambia, adding new product lines and revenuestreams, and strengthening our services to both growers and customers with investments in technologyand integrated market access for customers of Good Nature Seed. This expansion has includedadditional investment in property and machinery to cater for processing the additional production.
Position Purpose
Since 2014, Good Nature Agro success has been driven by a deep commitment to small-holder farmers, the highest-quality training and products, and our innovative approach to system change. In the next 18 months, we will be embarking on a bold growth trajectory including:
- Building further R&D capabilities for breeding seed with IP across SADC
- Increasing exports and other new business lines
- Scale our innovative new sales strategy, Good Nature Source
- Growing our leadership team and investing in talent development
- Reaching more than 30,000 farmers with ‘Seed + Service’ offering of training, market access
- Reaching more than 250,000 farmers with quality seed
- Releasing exciting new varieties created by our Seed Breeding and R&D Team
- Launching a game-changing digital platform, linking across our supply chain
- Acquiring new land and doubling factory processing capacity
- Increasing exports and building new business lines
Duties and Responsibilities
Field Supervisor is Responsible for overseeing the day-to-day operations of legume production, focusingon beans, groundnuts, and soybeans, across different districts. Candidates should possess expertisein #growingfarmersgrowingincomes
A. Private Extension Agents (PEA) & Farmer Management
- Identify and select capable farmers to be Private Extension Agents (Lead Farmers).
- Manage and audit the workflow of PEAs.
- Ensure effective two-way communication between GNA and it farmers through regular meetingsand field visits.
B. Sales and Marketing
- Responsible for developing sales opportunities and converting leads into registered GNA farmers.
- Responsible for maintaining business relationships with (but not exclusively): traditional leaders, EPA officers for MOA, GNA partners, prospective partners and influential community stakeholders.
C. Production
- Maintain overall responsibility for crop production and achievement of quality and volume targets inthe production area.
- Support in identifying and select farmers that are able to produce legumes according totheset criteria and SOPs for legume production.
- Ensure that the Grower Contract is well explained to growers before receiving inputs loans.
- Work closely with PEAs to ensure that all inputs are distributed on time.
- Ensure all farmers registered with GNA have signed contracts.
- Conduct weekly field visits to monitor crop progress.
- Coordinate buyback activities and ensure strict adherence to prescribed SOPs.
- Maintain responsibility for 100% loan recovery.
D. Data and Technology
- Ensure accurate registration of all farmer data in the GNA system.
- Ensure that all documents/records filled in throughout the growing season and buybackarecompleted accurately and on time e.g. receipts, dispatch notes, Goods Received Notes (GRNs) andGrower Contracts.
- Ensure timely and accurate collection of crop data for reporting purposes.
E. Training
- Conduct agronomic and technical trainings to PEAs/Lead Farmers to build their extensionserviceprovision capacity and skills.
- Supervise demonstration plots.
- Support PEAs to ensure that all Farmer Field Schools are held during the season.
F. Other
- Any other duties as assigned.
Essential Requirements and Desired Experience
- Minimum of a Diploma in Agriculture, Agribusiness, Crop Science or Agricultural Marketing.
- At least two years of experience working with small-scale farmers.
- Certified Seed inspector will be an added advantage.
- Ability/readiness to ride a motorcycle.
- Basic knowledge and understanding of the agriculture industry in Zambia
- Ability to use Microsoft Word and Excel.
- Possess good facilitation skills.
- Proficient in English, speaking and writing.
- Able to speak/understand one or more – local language
- Self-motivated and able to work with minimal supervision.
- Demonstrate project management skills.
- Sober minded, with ability to work as a team and with other organizations/partners.
- Ability to plan ahead and report on time.
- Has passion for small-scale farmers.
- Willing and ready to live in a rural community.
