Job Summary

The General Practitioner (GP) is the primary contact physician for patients seeking medical care at IHZ. The GP is responsible for providing comprehensive, continuous, and holistic medical care to individuals and families, focusing on their overall physical and mental well-being. This role involves diagnosing and treating a broad spectrum of acute and chronic illnesses, providing preventive care, health education, and coordinating patient care by referring to specialists when necessary.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

  • Patient Consultation and Diagnosis: Conduct thorough patient consultations, physical examinations, and review medical histories to assess health status, evaluate symptoms, and diagnose illnesses and injuries for patients of all ages.
  • Treatment Planning & Administration: Develop and implement personalized treatment plans. Prescribe appropriate medications, treatments, and lifestyle alterations in line with clinical guidelines. Administer basic medical treatments and minor surgical procedures, such as injections, immunizations, and wound dressing.
  • Diagnostic Testing and Interpretation: Order and interpret diagnostic tests (e.g., blood tests, X-rays, MRIs) and explain the findings and treatment options clearly to patients.
  • Care Coordination and Referrals: Serve as the primary point of contact, coordinating care across multidisciplinary teams (nurses, pharmacists, specialists). Refer patients to specialists for further evaluation, treatment, or hospitalization when their needs exceed the scope of primary care.
  • Preventive Care and Education: Provide health education, counseling, and advice on diet, nutrition, exercise, and other lifestyle habits to promote wellness and prevent illness.
  • Emergency Response: Handle medical emergencies and provide basic life support or immediate life-saving assistance until emergency services arrive and specialized care can be provided.
  • Documentation and Compliance: Maintain accurate, detailed, and up-to-date electronic medical records for all patient interactions using hospital management systems. Ensure all work is performed in continuing compliance with the laws, regulations, ethical codes, and highest standards of compliance set by the Health Professions Council of Zambia (HPCZ).
  • Team Collaboration: Work closely and collaboratively with nurses, lab staff, administrative teams, and other healthcare professionals to ensure efficient patient flow and integrated care.

Qualifications and Requirements

  • Education: A Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBChB) or equivalent medical degree from a recognized institution is required.
  • Registration & Licensing: Must be fully registered and possess a valid, full practicing license from the Health Professions Council of Zambia (HPCZ).
  • Experience: A minimum of 3 to 5 years of post-graduate clinical experience as a General Practitioner or Medical Officer, preferably in a hospital or busy clinic setting, is highly desirable.
  • Certifications: Certification in Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) or equivalent is often a requirement or a significant advantage.

  • Proficiency in using computer systems and medical software for record-keeping and data management.
  • A high degree of integrity and strict adherence to patient confidentiality and medical ethics
