Job Purpose:
To maintain, diagnose, repair, and overhaul all golf course maintenance equipment, including mowers, utility vehicles, aerators, sprayers, and other turf care machinery, ensuring maximum reliability, safety, and precision cutting performance for optimal playing conditions.
Key Responsibilities:
Preventive Maintenance & Repairs
- Perform scheduled preventive maintenance on all equipment per manufacturer specifications (oil changes, lubrication, filter replacements, hydraulic system checks, blade sharpening, and reel grinding).
- Diagnose and repair mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, and diesel/gasoline engine faults.
- Rebuild or replace major components such as engines, transmissions, hydraulic pumps, reels, and cutting units.
Equipment Management
- Maintain a clean, organized, and safe workshop environment, including parts inventory and tool control.
- Set up and adjust mowers (reel and rotary) to precise height-of-cut specifications required by the superintendent.
- Operate reel grinders, bedknife grinders, and lathes to maintain sharp, consistent cutting edges.
Record Keeping & Parts
- Log all maintenance, repairs, and parts usage in a CMMS or logbook.
- Identify and order replacement parts cost-effectively while minimizing downtime.
- Track equipment hours and schedule major overhauls in coordination with the superintendent.
Safety & Compliance
- Inspect equipment daily for safety issues (lights, brakes, roll-over protection, PTO shields).
- Ensure all equipment complies with OSHA or local safety regulations.
- Train operators on basic equipment care, daily checks, and safe operation.
Support & Teamwork
- Respond to on-course breakdowns to minimize disruption to maintenance crews.
- Assist with equipment selection and replacement recommendations (capital budget input).
- Collaborate with superintendent to prepare machinery for tournaments or special events.
Qualifications
Education & Certification
- High school diploma or equivalent (required).
- Certificate or Associate degree in Diesel Technology, Small Engine Repair, or Turf Equipment Technology (preferred).
- Valid driver’s license (commercial license may be required for road-going vehicles).
Experience
- 3–5 years of experience repairing and maintaining turf equipment (golf course, sports field, or landscaping fleet).
- Experience with major brands: John Deere, Toro, Jacobsen, Club Car, Yamaha, etc.
- Familiarity with reel grinding, bedknife grinding, and hydraulic systems.
Technical Skills
- Proficiency in gasoline, diesel, and electric drivetrains.
- Ability to read and interpret technical manuals, hydraulic schematics, and electrical diagrams.
- Basic welding and fabrication skills (MIG, arc, or oxy-acetylene) are highly desirable.
Key Competencies
- Attention to precision (mower height-of-cut tolerances).
- Strong diagnostic and problem-solving abilities.
- Self-motivated with ability to work independently.
- Physical stamina (lifting up to 50 lbs, bending, standing for long periods).
- Good communication skills to interact with operators and superintendent.
Working Conditions
- Environment: Workshop (noise, grease, oils, solvents) plus occasional on-course field repairs (exposure to weather, grass, dust).
- Schedule: Early mornings (start before sunrise to support maintenance crews), weekend or holiday rotation may be required.
- Hazards: Moving machinery, sharp blades, hydraulic fluid under pressure, and workshop tools.
Performance Indicators (KPIs)
- Equipment uptime (% of fleet available each morning).
- Preventive maintenance completion rate (on schedule).
- Repair turnaround time for critical equipment.
- Parts inventory accuracy and cost control.
