The Layers Operation Supervisor will be responsible for overseeing the daily operations of the AIU Layers House to ensure optimal egg production, bird health, biosecurity compliance, feed management, staff supervision, and operational efficiency. The role ensures that production targets, quality standards, and animal welfare requirements are consistently achieved.
Responsibilities or duties
Supervise daily management of layer birds.
Monitor feeding, watering, lighting, and ventilation systems and ensure they are functioning
Ensure proper egg collection, grading, packing, and storage procedures.
Maintain optimal bird productivity and minimize mortality rates.
Monitor flock performance indicators, including feed conversion, egg production, and bird health.
Actively participating in the marketing and selling of eggs and ex-layer birds, including direct engagement with institutional clients, community buyers, and other commercial channels as directed.
Driving and personally delivering eggs to clients when required, including any other operational driving duties pertaining to the layer enterprise.
Coordinating all sales activities in a transparent, ethical, and professionally accountable manner, ensuring all transactions are accurately recorded and reported.
Building and maintaining positive relationships with existing clients while actively identifying and pursuing opportunities to expand the customer base.
Ensuring that all egg products marketed and delivered meet quality standards appropriate for sale and the institutional reputation.
Ensure compliance with occupational health and safety requirements.
Enforce proper use of protective clothing and equipment.
Ensure compliance with animal welfare standards and farm policies.
Actively participating in CCTV monitoring activities in collaboration with the Business Operations Manager or any other personnel approved for this purpose, to ensure maximum accountability and security of the operation.
Remaining vigilant against theft, vandalism, unauthorized access, and any form of human-inflicted loss or damage to the layer unit, its assets, and its produce.
Reporting any security incidents, breaches, or suspicious activities to the Business Operations Manager and/or University Security immediately.
Cooperating fully with institutional security audits, investigations, and reviews as required.
Qualifications or requirements (e.g., education, skills)
Diploma or Certificate in Animal Husbandry, Agribusiness, Agriculture, or a related field (ZAQA Validated)
Experience needed
Minimum of two (2) years of practical experience in poultry management, layer operations, or a comparable agribusiness supervisory role.

Key Competencies and Technical Requirements:
Sound knowledge of layer poultry husbandry, biosecurity practices, and flock health management.
Competence in basic financial record-keeping and operational reporting.
Proficiency in driving with a valid driver's licence.
Working knowledge of CCTV systems and general security protocols is an advantage.
Strong organisational, planning, and time management skills.
High level of integrity, accountability, and professional ethics.
Effective written and verbal communication skills.
Ability to work independently, take initiative, and function effectively under supervision.
Computer literacy for basic data recording and reporting purposes.
