Position Summary
The Mechanical Technician (Cummins Genset Specialist) is responsible for the installation, maintenance, repair, and diagnostics of Cummins diesel generators. The role ensures that all genset equipment operates efficiently, safely, and in accordance with Cummins standards and company procedures.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform routine and preventive maintenance on Cummins diesel generator sets.
- Troubleshoot mechanical, electrical, and fuel system faults on gensets.
- Conduct full diagnostics using Cummins tools, software, and service manuals.
- Repair and overhaul engines, alternators, cooling systems, fuel systems, and exhaust systems.
- Install gensets, including mounting, alignment, and commissioning.
- Test generator performance and load testing to ensure optimal operation.
- Maintain accurate service records, job cards, and maintenance reports.
- Ensure compliance with safety procedures and environmental regulations.
- Provide on-site and field service support for clients.
- Identify required spare parts and prepare material requisitions.
- Support major repairs, engine rebuilds, and component replacements.
- Communicate clearly with supervisors and clients regarding technical findings.
- Train junior technicians on Cummins genset systems when required.
Qualifications and Experience
- Certificate or Diploma in Mechanical Engineering, Heavy Equipment Repair, or related field.
- Minimum 2–6 years’ hands-on experience working with Cummins diesel engines or gensets.
- Strong knowledge of Cummins engines, control systems, and diagnostic tools (e.g., Insite).
- Experience in troubleshooting and repairing mechanical and electrical issues.
- Valid driver’s licence (added advantage).
Skills and Competencies
- Strong mechanical and technical troubleshooting skills.
- Ability to read and interpret technical diagrams and service manuals.
- Good understanding of engine systems (cooling, fuel, lubrication, electrical).
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
- Strong communication and reporting skills.
- High attention to detail, safety awareness, and problem-solving ability.
- Ability to work in field environments and respond to emergency call-outs.
Working Conditions
- Workshop and field-based work.
- May require overtime, standby duty, and travel to remote sites.
- Exposure to diesel, oil, noise, and heavy machinery.
