The Zambia Statistics Agency (ZamStats) was established under the Statistics Act, Chapter 127 of the Laws of Zambia, for the coordination of an integrated National Statistical System (NSS) to build a sustainable capacity for the production and use of statistical data and information for planning purposes at all levels of governance.
ZamStats has embarked on a transformative agenda which responds to the current trends in the statistical eco-system. Principal Communications Officer
Salary Grade: ZSA04/K
Positions: 1
A. Job Purpose
To promote and safeguard the positive image of the Agency by leading the development, implementation, and coordination of corporate communication and public relations strategies.
The Principal Communications Officer is responsible for enhancing the Agency’s reputation, promoting stakeholder engagement, and ensuring the effective dissemination of information to the public, media, Government, development partners, and other key stakeholders. The role provides strategic leadership in corporate communications, branding, media relations, reputation management, and public awareness initiatives in support of the Agency’s mandate and objectives.
B. Key Responsibilities
Corporate Communication and Public Relations
- Develop and implement corporate communication and public relations strategies aligned with the Agency’s strategic objectives.
- Develop communication plans and campaigns that support organizational priorities.
- Manage and protect the Agency’s corporate brand identity and reputation.
- Coordinate stakeholder engagement and public awareness campaigns to enhance the Agency’s visibility and public confidence.
Media Relations and Public Information
- Manage media relations and coordinate press briefings, interviews, press releases, and public statements.
- Oversee the dissemination of publications, reports, and official statistical information.
- Monitor and evaluate media coverage and advise Management on communication risks and opportunities.
- Maintain comprehensive records of media reports, videos, publications, magazines, and brochures for reference and institutional memory.
Digital Communication and Content Development
- Manage the Agency’s digital communication platforms, including the website and social media channels.
- Develop communication content and promotional materials for various audiences.
- Prepare speeches, newsletters, corporate publications, and other communication materials.
- Produce promotional materials to enhance statistical awareness and public engagement.
Stakeholder Engagement and Public Awareness
- Provide communication support during major surveys, censuses, exhibitions, and other Agency events.
- Organize statistical publicity shows, exhibitions, public forums, and public relations events to promote awareness of official statistics.
- Coordinate preparatory activities for exhibitions and other outreach initiatives.
Leadership and Administration
- Supervise communications and dissemination staff and ensure effective performance management.
- Develop work plans and monitor the implementation of communication activities.
- Provide strategic advice to Management on communication matters affecting the Agency.
C. Minimum Qualifications and Experience
- Grade 12 School Certificate or equivalent with five (5) O-Level passes.
- Bachelor's Degree in Mass Communication, Public Relations, Media and Journalism Studies, Communication and Media Studies, or an equivalent qualification.
- Master's Degree in a relevant field will be an added advantage.
- Must be a registered member of the Zambia Institute of Public Relations and Communication (ZIPRC).
- Minimum of eight (8) years' relevant work experience, including at least three (3) years at supervisory level.
