Position Summary
The Roads Engineer will be responsible for the design, construction, inspection, maintenance, and quality assurance of haul roads and access roads within the open pit and surrounding operational areas. The role is critical in ensuring safe, efficient, and cost-effective movement of heavy mining equipment and materials, while maintaining compliance with engineering and safety standards.
Key Responsibilities
- Design and oversee construction of mine haul roads, access roads, ramps, and drainage systems.
- Ensure compliance with geometric standards for gradient, camber, width, turning radii, and load-bearing capacity.
- Monitor road surface conditions and implement proactive maintenance programs.
- Supervise compaction, material selection, and quality control testing of road construction materials.
- Coordinate with Mining, Safety, and Plant Departments to align road design with operational requirements.
- Conduct regular road audits and inspections to ensure safe traffic management.
- Implement erosion control and stormwater drainage solutions.
- Prepare technical reports, road maintenance schedules, and cost forecasts.
- Manage contractors and supervise road maintenance crews.
- Ensure adherence to environmental regulations and mine safety standards.
Minimum Qualifications & Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in civil engineering or related field.
- Registered with the Engineering Institution of Zambia (EIZ) and the Engineering Registration Board (ERB).
- Minimum of 5 years' experience in road construction and maintenance, preferably within a mining environment.
- Strong knowledge of mine haul road design standards and heavy equipment traffic requirements.
- Proven experience in supervising construction teams and contractors.
- Sound understanding of occupational health and safety regulations in mining.
