Background
African Parks (AP) is a non-profit conservation organisation that takes on responsibility for the long-term management of protected areas in partnership with governments and local communities. AP manages 24 protected areas in 13 countries covering over 20 million hectares in Angola, Benin, Central African Republic, Chad, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Malawi, Mozambique, the Republic of Congo, South Sudan, Rwanda, Zambia and Zimbabwe.
Job Overview
The Guide will be responsible for delivering exceptional safari experiences to guests through professional guiding, wildlife interpretation, and outstanding hospitality. The role will support the Liuwa Camp operations by ensuring guest safety, maintaining high guiding standards, and promoting conservation awareness in line with the values and standards of Liuwa Plain National Park.
Duties and responsibilities:
- Lead and conduct guided safari drives and other guest activities in a safe, professional, and engaging manner.
- Share knowledge of wildlife, ecosystems, birdlife, flora, culture, and conservation initiatives within Liuwa Plain National Park.
- Interpret animal behaviour, tracking signs, and ecological systems to enhance the guest experience.
- Ensure the safety and comfort of guests during all safari activities.
- Maintain safari vehicles, radios, and guiding equipment in good working condition and report defects promptly.
- Conduct pre-drive vehicle inspections and ensure vehicles are clean and presentable at all times.
- Uphold all park regulations, safety procedures, and conservation principles.
- Deliver excellent customer service and maintain a high standard of hospitality throughout the guest experience.
- Assist guests with questions, special requests, and general camp information.
- Work closely with camp operations staff to ensure smooth coordination of guest activities.
- Assist with wildlife monitoring, research activities, and conservation initiatives when required.
- Promote responsible and sustainable tourism practices.
- Represent Liuwa Plain National Park professionally and positively at all times.
- Carry out any other duties assigned by the Supervisor.
Required Skills and Competencies
- Strong knowledge of wildlife, ecosystems, tracking, and conservation principles.
- Excellent communication and storytelling skills.
- Strong guest relations and hospitality skills.
- Ability to work long hours in challenging outdoor environments.
- Ability to walk long distances when required.
- Good observation and problem-solving skills.
- Strong safety awareness and ability to remain calm under pressure.
- Ability to operate 4x4 safari vehicles safely in off-road conditions.
- Team player with flexibility and adaptability.
- Physically fit and able to work in remote conditions.
- Honest, professional, and responsible.
Role requirements
- Certificate or Diploma in Professional Safari Guiding, Wildlife Management, Tourism and Hospitality, Conservation, or a related field.
- Full Safari Guide Licence (Zambian Licence).
- Valid PSV Class B Driver’s Licence.
- Minimum of five (5) years’ professional guiding experience in a safari environment.
- Strong knowledge of wildlife, conservation, and safari operations.
- Previous experience working in remote environments will be an added advantage.
- Excellent interpersonal and customer service skills.
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
- Willingness to live and work in a remote camp environment.
- Knowledge of the Lozi language will be an added advantage.
- Good physical fitness and medical fitness to perform guiding duties.
